Does it have a great bass ?

It has bass. Great bass? As in BOOMING FEEL IT IN YOUR CHEST THUMPING bass? No. It is a balanced mixed. It doesn't suck. Not tinny. But if you are wanting a deep moving bass you won't find it on this box. I would say it is a good replica of what I had back in the 80's. I personally love it.

I bought this for my 91yr old dad. can someone tell me how you got it to play with batteries? he put them in and says it won’t play. is there a switch

How it works is that when you plug the AC power cord into the back of the unit, the batteries are cut off. He may have unplugged it from the wall but left the power cord plugged into the back of the radio. He needs to unplug the power cord from the back of the radio, as well as unplug the cord from the electric outlet, to get it to work on batteries. If he has already unplugged the cord from the back of the radio and it still won't play on batteries, here is what's probably happening. Inside the jack for the power cord on the back of the radio there is a little flap that moves back and forth when you put the power cord in and pull it out. When you push the power cord in, you're also pushing this little flap upward, which switches it from battery power to AC electric power. This flap might not be popping back down when the power cord is removed. I would suggest unplugging the cord from the electrical outlet, then plug and unplug the power cord from the back of the unit several times to see if you can free up this flap. (When it's popped out, you can see it inside the jack.) If this doesn't work, the unit may be defective and need to be exchanged.

Is this product wireless or does it take rechargeable batteries?

It takes size D batteries and has a power cord if you want to plug it into an outlet.
