Asafoetida is a fantasic spice. It adds wonderful flavour to many dishes. I like to add it to a lentil curry: Red Lentils, Onion, Garlic, Garam Masala and Asafoetida, and a very tasty dish can be cooked in next to no time, and if more flavour and heat is required then other spices can be added to the dish.It is an easy spice to use – Asafoetida is not a spice that you could easily ruin a dish with by adding too much (unlike some chillies for example), it gives a fantastic flavour to food, and it’s good for you as well.This packet of the spice is well packaged and was delivered securely in a plastic outer envelope that had the separate spice packet inside – from Jalpur Millers Online.

Received in good time - good quality versions of this hard to find in the supermarket.. sometimes do find it but have a look at the list of ingredients .. Asafoetida is quite often the fourth down.. meaning you're really buying other things with 'a bit' of what you're really looking for. I can tell from the smell of this one that it's better quality.. and I'm happy with it.. but I still keep a look out for the original Indian 'Hing' I bought years ago .. that really did stink the kitchen out! .. a must have spice though.. love using it.(quick update .. I did find the Indian version I mentioned .. but the smell didn't seem as strong as I remember.. I think I've got to like it more over the years.. so will be sticking with the Jalpur from now on!)

Never used hing before. I can't eat onions/garlic/leeks, so food is quite bland at times. My brother suggested it. Having seen that it smells like the devil (never been that close to him, so no idea of his personal hygiene levels) I was a bit reluctant. It arrived quickly and well packaged. I tentatively opened the pack (I was wearing my jumper up around my nose, just in case). But actually it just smells a bit like pickled onions. I put about 3 grains (you can never be too careful in case the devil appears while cooking) in a stew, it was fine, slight aromatic flavour, then tried a bit more in curry.....it was surprisingly very nice. Added a kind of oniony (is that a word?) savoury taste which was actually delicious. If you've never tried it, go ahead and live dangerously...........................................

This product arrives flat - and I mean flat! Arrives well sealed in a large flattened bag so trying to extract the powder without wasting it is impossible. Perhaps they should consider smaller bag with same content to make things easier for consumer. Very prompt despatch so pleased with that.

This spice is a wonderful thing. It is very rich - you don't need much - but is fabulous for adding to dishes to enhance flavour. It has a strong smell - don't be put off (I find it delicious and it makes my mouth water) as it really is great to give that extra element to whatever it is you are cooking. Good and light. No strong smell

It smells better than I recall a previous brand smelling. I put some into a small shaker with tight lid and taped up the remaining bag. I use it to fry with other spices in oil before adding remaining ingredients. Adds depth of flavour. This amount will last a while, as a little goes a long way with this stuff in general.

The things I read about this are right. To my nose it smells like onions in hot gasoline. How surprising that cooking with minute amounts of this makes such tasty dishes! I use it in a saffron rice recipe.
