Handmade Beauty is an inspirational guide to making skincare and haircare products at home. Cosmetic experts Juliette Goggin and Abi Righton show how, with a few basic materials and some kitchen equipment, anyone can craft simple yet effective recipes with natural ingredients. Based on the authorsโ in-depth knowledge of the use of natural products and active ingredients in contemporary skin- and hair care, Handmade Beauty includes some of the latest thinking in natural cosmetics. The first part of the book explores the different ingredients, equipment and methods you need to make the cosmetic projects. Juliette and Abi guide you through the basic principles, such as making infusions, and also explain what you need to know about storage and safety. The second part of the book is devoted to 37 luscious recipes for the face, body and hair, plus suggestions for adaptations. The featured projects cater for all skin and hair types, and include face and body scrubs, cleansers, toners, moisturizers, hand creams, lip balms, body butters, bath bombs, foot sprays, shampoos and hair treatments. Step-by-step illustrations and clear instructions throughout ensure that recipes are easy to follow. The book concludes with ideas on packaging and presenting your beautiful homemade products. Review: A really great introduction into making cosmetics - This book is really well presented; it is stylish and professional and immediately draws you in to read more. The content is excellent and gives details of numerous ingredients with explanations on why we use them. It gives recipes you can make yourself using just the basic equipment you have in your home. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting to create their own cosmetics! Review: Despite some limitations, a lovely book - A lovely book that is well laid out and a pleasure to read. I have a couple of observations: (1) reference to grape seed oil as a preservative is not strictly correct; it is, rather, an antioxidant that slows down the rate of deterioration of oils. Recipes containing water (or hydrous ingredients such as aloe vera) will also need a preservative to prevent microbial growth. (2) it would have been better if the ingredients had been listed as percentages rather than as a mix of weight (gs), volume (mls) and teaspoons. This way iterations of the product might be more consistent. Nevertheless, the recipes look achievable and I look forward to trying them.

Well worth reading
What an informative and well written book. It presents a solid guide not just in terms of how products can be made but also offers a wealth of sound advice in terms of raw materials and products and their possible uses and benefits. All this is done in a way which is easy to understand, friendly and relaxed and will appeal to readers and enthusiasts across a wide spectrum of the population. The reader is never patronised but included in the whole process of discovery. A great reference book for all, even those who work in the industry.

Looks really good if your into handmade recipes. Will have a go at a few when I have more time but the book is a good way to learn about it all, if you just make them for yourself.
