The River - The Complete BBC Series [DVD] [1988]

Gentle, subtle comedy (with some not-so-subtle moments) with heart and kindness.
Despite others disagreeing with me, I think David Essex’s acting perfectly suits the role. The rest of the parts are equally well-cast and the writing has a depth unusual for comedies of the time.

Classic Beeb tv comedy
I saw a comment on social media and bought this. I have to say it's not my cup of tea canned audience laughter. The quality is good however but as I said didn't rock my boat.

Awesome
I remembered The River as being fun and that I recalled I loved it when it appeared on the television, way back in the 80's, now, many years on, finally I have my own copy to treasure and watch over... Awesome it is as brilliant as I remembered it and of course, if one likes Mr Essex just a wee bit, then wow, he is just perfect, and gorgeous, and, and, and well I'm in love all over again!!! David Essex can act, has so many wonderful expressions and he makes you believe he is the lock keeper.. living the dream. The other members of the cast are excellent too, the timings as they all spar off each other are flawless, and it is witty and funny, and with reference to what was going on in that decade. If I had to be critical I would have preferred no back ground laughter, but then again, that was typical of the time it was broadcast..... It comes up fresh second, (third, fourth?,) time around, and as for a first time, well, for the romantic dreamer, I'd recommend it........ Ok! must go for a stroll down towpath now... ....again..!

The River
Having had this bought for a birthday present I've just sat and watched the DVD from start to finish. It's beautifully shot and David Essex is a dream to watch, his naturalness shines through and those twinkling Blue Eyes are heavenly. I wonder why there was never a 2nd series as I could watch this forever.I found it funny, relaxing, natural and easy to watch, a bit of escapism. In today's world it's what is needed and this has hit the spot. Thank you for issuing this release.Mrs Jordan

Really worth a look
I remember watching this series in the late 80s and was really pleased when it was released on dvd. This series really is funny and has some great one liners. David Essex is absolutely gorgeous and was perfect for the part of Davey. The supporting cast are also excellent. I often wondered what happened to Katy Murphy, as she is great as the firey Scot Sarah. Never get bored of watching the character Tom end up thrown in the lock in every episode. The setting is breathtaking and really makes you want to go and visit where it was filmed. This is a gentle comedy with some really funny moments. Definately worth watching. There was only 1 series of this comedy but its certainly one of the better ones from the BBC.

If your a David Essex Fan you will love this🥰
Got this for Christmas. I’ve just watched it today! Omg David Essex is seriously sexy in this. It’s a rom com series of 6 episodes. It’s quite tame but David makes it so watchable to a lady born in the sixties and a teenager in the seventies!!!I still think David Essex is seriously sexy🥰🥰🥰
