A recent introductee to Lamy fountain pens, a wholly different and excellent writing experience without needing to spend a fortune, which later led to the discovery that they offered this calligraphy set which is supplied within a tin box, just as are many artists' pencils, pastels or inks. It comprises a barrel and three nib units, respectively of 1.1, 1.5 and 1.9mm nib widths, the latter pre-fitted to the barrel. The smallest exhibits very little difference in the widths of vertical, horizontal and diagonal strokes, the mid-sized provides a noticeable difference and the broadest a very significant difference. The vertical strokes are the broadest, horizontal the thinnest with diagonals in the middle. A sample sheet is included. A pack of black ink cartridges is also provided. For the amount of kit provided, and considering that unmounted nibs are typically £5 or £6 each, it is excellent value and will provide sufficient for an introduction to lettering and everyday use. The fully assembled pen is longer and thinner than most other Lamy pens and so may require a change in hold.It should be borne in mind that this kit is not intended for or suited to professional lettering but will be ideal for those who wish for greater character to be present in their writing. The variation in line widths on the different portions of each letterform may be an initial surprise to those familiar with the uniformity of line with a standard nib and especially from more modern alternatives such as the ballpoint, gel pens and some fibretips. In addition to cartridges which Lamy offer in blue, black, blue-black, red and green, you can add a Z24 filler adapter which will then allow use of bottled inks. You need not be limited to the five standard Lamy colours but you can use other brands which will each include some less common colours such as violet, purple and brown but also sometimes a variety of shades of some colours. Artists' inks intended for traditional nib or drawing pens should not be used.The kit is basic but the nibs used cover the entire Lamy calligraphic range. Unfortunately, obliques are not included. The nibs match in their writing qualities those used in the many other Lamy fountain pens. Ink flow is easy and usually immediate, only sometimes requiring little more than an initial priming with a saliva-moistened fingertip, after which the writing experience betters some far more expensive pens.A brief User Guide is included in four languages including English and showing expected results from the three nibs. As the kit is well-priced, it will make an excellent gift for anyone with an interest in lettering, or for personal use when writing on birthday cards, handwritten invitations and other similar tasks. In this instance it was purchased as a gift for someone with an expressed interest in the art of calligraphy but she had just purchased traditional pens and nib sets that provide a wider range of effects and better suited to the inks and materials used for illustrated presentation pieces that she again intends to produce (post-university). Rejected as a gift, it was later returned.

The pen writes very nicely, although the body is quite long. The aluminium cap looks very neat compared to the usual red cap. The nib is very well behaved and writes easily - I had to slightly adjust the tines when it first arrived to get them aligned perfectly but since then it never scratches and flows smoothly

1.9 mm is just the right width of pen tip for my style and uses. I was looking for a pen to match the one I had way back in the late 1960s. This is actually better in many ways and I am enjoying using it. However, the pen comes supplied with a blue ink cartridge, and I have a thing about calligraphic writing being strictly in black.Eamonn

Having bought some reasonably high quality calligraphy paper to combine with this i have killed many hours of my life learning to write using this pen. Happily i am getting better and would encourage anyone else to buy this as well.

Bought for my Grandmother who has the most beautiful handwriting. She is absolutely in love with writing but hadn't a proper caligraphy set. She assures me the nibs write smoothly and she can 'only just feel the paper beneath the nib', which to her is good. This gift made her Christmas and my year as she now writes to me regularly, which is nice.

Really good pen, very nice to write with, it has made my handwriting look fairly elegant where before it was a mess.

Le look très allongé est un peu particulier mais ce stylo plume est agréable à l’usage et permet comme prévu de beaux effets de calligraphie. Dommage que le choix des couleurs ne soit pas aussi nombreux qu’avec les Safari ou les Al Star

Una superba penna Lamy da scrivania, con ricambi/pennini intercambiabili con quelli della versione da tasca. Le penne Lamy scrivono davvero molto bene e - anche per chi possiede penne stilografiche più costose come me - sono davvero insuperabili specie per calligrafia. Molti pennini di diverso spessore e con diverse funzioni acquistabili a parte.
