Cinderella - A Twist In Time [DVD]

Cinderella gets a backbone!
I'm a 22 year old princess and I love this film. It's great for all die-hard adherents of Disney philosophy and believers in happily ever after. Obviously it's not as amazing as the original Cinderella film, but it's a lot better than the second, and is a great story in its own right. The final part of this review is a synopsis including spoilers, so don't read it if you want to be surprised by what happens. The film is all about the very Disney idea of the power of true love, and about people destined for each other overcoming the odds to be together. Though I love the original Cinderella character, she was a zeitgeist: avery 1940s 'damsel in distress', languishing in the tower waiting for mice or the fairy godmother to come to her rescue. That all changes here, and her character is developed into a more modern woman, who has to use her initiative and courage. She retains all the kind and caring hallmarks of her original incarnation, but this is now coupled with a determination to fight back against her stepmother, to combat injustice and to fight for what she wants. The mice are still there to help her, of course, but this time you can really put her 'happily ever after' down to her own gumption.Synopsis:Cinderella and the Prince have had a perfect year of wedded bliss; meanwhile, the two stepsisters have been struggling to keep up with the housework and are having a thoroughly miserable time of it from their mother. The fairy godmother organises an anniversary party for Cinderella and the Prince, Anastasia stumbles across it, and the magic wand falls into her hands. She accidentally turns the fairy godmother to stone, before handing the wand to her mother. The stepmother uses the wand to turn time back to the moment the Grand Duke arrives at the chateau to try the glass slipper on the stepsisters. Using the magic wand, the stepmother makes the slipper fit Anastasia. Cinderella is freed from the tower seconds too late, as the Grand Duke is leaving. The stepmother doubles back and issues a stark warning to Cinderella to keep away from the palace and the Prince, before smashing the other slipper that Cinderella had in her pocket. After they leave, Cinderella realises that the Prince will know he didn't dance with Anastasia, and resolves to get to the palace and present herself to the Prince. She sneaks into the palace via the servants' entrance, and bluffs her way through as the 'royal mouse-catcher'. Once inside, she and the mice split up to look for the Prince. When Anastasia is presented to the Prince as the girl who fits the slipper, he is confused and tries to send the stepmother and sisters home. When he turns away, the stepmother casts another spell, making the Prince forget Cinderella and believe that he danced with Anastasia at the ball. He proposes to Anastasia, and the wedding date is set for that evening. Unbeknown to them, the mice saw everything, and rush to find Cinderella.Meanwhile, Cinderella has bumped into the Prince as he looks for his father to tell him the good news. He doesn't know who she is.The mice find Cinderella and explain what the stepmother has done. Horrified, Cinderella resolves to get the wand back. The Grand Duke shows the stepmother and sisters the preparations he has made so far for the wedding. Unimpressed, the stepmother draws the Grand Duke aside for a word; a food fight breaks out between the sisters as they sample the Hors d'Ouvres. The Prince, having found his father, is eager to introduce him to Anastasia. They open the door to the room just in time to see the enormous cake topple over, burying Anastasia. Trying to recover the situation, the Prince invites her to dance. The dance is disasterous: Anastasia constantly steps on the Prince's feet and eventually falls over, ripping his clothes in the process. The King, who watched the whole thing, calls Anastasia in for a private chat. The Prince, meanwhile, is confused that he is not feeling any of the same tenderness and affection for Anastasia that he thinks he felt at the ball. The King tells Anastasia that her dreadful dancing reminds him of his Queen, who trod on his feet, but took good care of his heart. He gives her something much more valuable than the land, jewels and horses that Princesses usually get: a seashell that was the Queen's most treasured possession, a symbol of true love.Naturally Drusilla and the stepmother are scornful of this little token. Anastasia begins to have doubts about whether what they are doing is the right thing.Cinderella finds the room that the three women are staying in, but the mice deem it too dangerous for her to sneak in and try to retrieve the wand herself. They sneak in themselves, and while attempting to get the wand, set Lucifer the cat on fire. Much chaos ensues, and the stepmother tells her girls to call for the housekeeper. Before they ring the bell, there is a knock on the door - it is Cinderella dressed as a maid with her face well hidden. She enters the room and begins to clean, covering for the mice who have now found the wand. The stepmother unmasks her, and Cinderella and the mice escape with the wand. The stepmother shouts that Cinderella is a thief, and the guards chase her through the palace. The Prince appears, and she is caught just as she is on the verge of undoing the spell placed on him. The stepmother takes the wand back. Cinderella begs the Prince to listen and touches his hand just as she's being dragged off. The Prince realises there's something special about her, but can't work out what it is. After the Prince leaves, the stepmother orders a guard to put Cinderella on the next ship leaving the Kingdom and banish her forever. The mice find the Prince and sing him a song explaining that he is under a magic spell and that Cinderella was the girl at the ball. The Prince rushes out of the palace to save Cinderella.Meanwhile, Cinderella is put onto the ship, which pulls out of the harbour. The Prince, having missed the ship, tries to gallop his horse off a cliff to leap onto the ship as it passes; the horse has other ideas and stops dead. The Prince flies off the cliff, catches a rope and swings down onto the deck. He and Cinderella are reunited. At the palace, the stepmother watches the Prince come galloping up with Cinderella on his horse. Anastasia is devastated to realise that the Prince doesn't love her, and that the magic isn't as powerful as the bond of true love between Cinderella and the Prince. The stepmother uses the wand to zap them out of the room just as the guards burst in to arrest them. The stepmother and sisters can't be found anywhere in the palace. The King is furious, but consoled by the fact that his son is going to marry Cinderella. As Cinderella is preparing herself for the wedding, the stepmother appears from the shadows. She calls Anastasia, who appears behind her as Cinderella's exact double. The stepmother zaps Cinderella and the mice, intending to marry Anastasia to the Prince in Cinderella's guise. She sends Lucifer after them to make sure that they don't return alive.Cinderella and the mice reappear inside a pumpkin, which grows into a coach and snares a horse. Lucifer appears in human form as the coach driver and begins to gallop it away from the palace. The mice escape to try to stop the coach, while Cinderella shoulders a hole in the pumpkin wall to escape through. She knocks Lucifer off his seat and into a nearby river (which turns him back into a cat), separates the coach from the horse, then leaps onto the horse just before the coach plunges over the edge of a cliff and shatters.Wheeling the horse around, Cinderella gallops back to the palace for her wedding.Meanwhile, the King is walking Anastasia down the aisle. At the altar, she has second thoughts, realising that it's better to be loved by a commoner for yourself than loved by a Prince as someone else. Just as Anastasia says "I don't", Cinderella bursts in.Furious, the stepmother bursts out from behind a curtain and begins to turn all the guards into farm animals. She points the wand at Anastasia to turn her into a toad - Cinderella dives in front of Anastasia, and the Prince in turn dives in front of Cinderella. He draws his sword: the spell bounces off the reflective metal and hits the stepmother and Drusilla. They disappear, and reappear in front of their chateau as toads.Using the wand, Anastasia turns herself back to normal and brings the fairy godmother back. With order restored, the fairy godmother gives Cinderella a beautiful wedding gown, Cinderella marries the Prince, and they all live happily ever after... again!

A "what if" for kids!
I rented this film so my husband and I could go on a date and leave a new film with the babysitter. I actually started watching it while I got ready! My babies loved it and I had to re-rent it twice as it's no longer available on shelves. While this is not to be compared to the "moving art" of the 40's and 50's Disney films it is a fantastic story!Cinderella is a sweet, kind, caring and graceful girl who gets to live a Happily Ever After life thanks to her friends the mice and her fairy Godmother. But what if the magic that propelled Cinderella to "Princess" was in the wrong hands? Cinderella's fairy tale is rewound and rewritten leaving our heroine to fend for herself. I was impressed that Cinderella maintained her sweet and happy demeanor even while taking responsibility for her future. In today's world it's refreshing when a girl can maintain grace, dignity, and class while still reaching for and obtaining her dreams. Some of the songs that Cinderella sings are very pretty and they did well in finding a voice talent that would come close to the original actress both in demeanor and pitch. A few of the songs can get kind of cheesy and the mice have a bit of a tendency to really annoy you but I promise you'll be watching your babies act out to and laugh at these moments. This movie is geared towards young children with enough of a plot to stand on its own and to be enjoyed by all ages. The animation is brighter than in the original but tries to maintain "the look" of Cinderella and her fellow cast. The moral of the story is that if you believe in Love and in yourself you can do anything, even without Disney's signature dose of magic.I would recommend this product to anyone looking to revisit the world of Cinderella. You won't leave disappointed this time.
