a thrilling journey full of adventure
What a great sequel! It started off a bit slow but when it caught momentum it made me lose sense of time and space. The fantasy realm that the pages take you on make you feel as if you are a third party standing there, laughing, crying and fighting along Shiori and Takkan. I loved it from beginning to end!

NO SPOILERS
NO SPOILERS. I like it less than the other boon as its a bit slower and less climactic but its still a good book. Very pretty cover but you know what they say.

Just not up to Six Crimson Cranes
Elizabeth Lim's The Dragon's Promise was the sequel to Six Crimson Cranes, which I absolutely loved. But the sequel was a complete let down in my opinion and unfortunately ruined the duology for me.The dragons, which I'd been so excited to see more of, were just... mean. That whole part of the book was a bit disappointing because of that - even Seryu seemed pretty mean and unlike the way he was portrayed in Six Crimson Cranes. There was no development of their culture, of their motivations or wants or emotions, just dragons as antagonists for no really convincing reason. They definitely didn't come off as cool and mystical and powerful as Six Crimson Cranes implied. And we were never in any doubt of Shiori's feelings for Takkan at any point, so the romantic interest plotline just didn't work - Seryu at no point seemed to challenge Takkan as an actual romantic interest, which just came across like such a wet blanket. The plot was all over the place, the villain wasn't compelling, too much and simultaneously not enough was happening (it had vibes like episodes of an anime where the main plot barely progresses even though loads of things happen along the way), and the attempt at a second twist ending didn't work for me. It would have been better if Six Crimson Cranes had been edited into a standalone honestly.

captivatingly beautiful!
This genre is a first for me. I absolutely loved it! Devoured both books quickly. Just so magical, a beautiful escape. Thoroughly enjoyed the journey.

A beautifully, captivating sequel
Princess Shiori made a promise and now her journey is just beginning; returning the dragon's pearl to the rightful owner means travelling to the kingdom of dragons, escaping political intrigue from those who wish to steal the pearl's magic and saving her homeland of Kiata from the demons that threaten to abolish it to nothing. Danger is lurking up ahead, but Shiori is adamant that she must face the demons and discover the truth, or her family and home will be gone forever. The only question is, what price will she pay to achieve it in the end?The Dragon's Promise was a beautiful ending to this East-Asian-inspired fantasy that incorporates the storytelling nature of fairy tales, there is adventure around every crevice of this narrative and it makes for a wonderful read. Shiori is a captivating protagonist, driving the narrative forward as she grows from a stubborn, self-absorbed Princess into a stubborn, courageous person who is willing to fight for her family and home. In this instalment, Shiori finds herself ensnared in a different political landscape with the dragons, as well as then returning home to find that incredible upheaval has transpired after locking all the demons back in their mountain. Her love for Takkan is apparent, and the development of their relationship is a nice subplot that makes the sacrifices all the more heartbreaking and bittersweet in the end.

Perfect sequel to 6CC👍
I read Six Crimson Cranes and didn't realise there was a follow up until only recently.I'm so pleased I bought it. It didn't disappoint! It felt like a natural next step from Six Crimson Cranes and started exactly where it left off - No strange inbetween story or missing years before continuation of the original plot (I mention this as, in so many other books I've read before, this has been the case and it was very disruptive!).I personally couldn't put it down and I finished it in 3 days! 😉Highly recommended read 👍
