Product Description School teacher Eugene Simonet (Kevin Spacey) sets his class an assignment: they must each think up a way to make the world a better place. This prompts eleven-year-old Trevor McKinney (Haley Joel Osment) to develop the idea that instead of paying back good deeds, one should instead pay them forward. Putting his idea into practice, Trevor performs an act of kindness for three different people, requiring each of those three to perform three further kindnesses themselves. In doing so he starts a chain reaction which does indeed make the world a better place. .co.uk Review Director Mimi Leder's third movie, Pay it Forward, finds her moving into softer, more intimate territory after making her name with a pair of high-budget action spectaculars, The Peacemaker and Deep Impact. This is a would-be heart-warming fable about the power of human kindness, but it's handled with such heavy sententiousness as to suggest that she might do better sticking to the big-bang stuff. Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense, A.I.), son of a struggling lone parent (Helen Hunt) in Las Vegas, is influenced by inspirational teacher Kevin Spacey to come up with a scheme for social betterment: do acts of benevolence to three people, each of whom then does something good for three more, and so on. Inevitably, the lad's first ventures come to grief, but then the idea starts catching on and spreading, and a reporter in Los Angeles gets wind of it. This Readers Digest-ish scenario, treated with great solemnity by Leder and screenwriter Leslie Dixon, leaves the cast struggling to make something individual out of their pre-cooked roles. As you'd expect given such a line-up of acting talent, several scenes come off better than they deserve, and Spacey in particular does wonders with what is, in effect, two Hollywood clichés rolled into one: not just "offbeat inspirational teacher" but "shy, reclusive burns victim" as well. Interesting, too, to see a Vegas-set movie that shows a low-rent side of the city well away from the glitz and glamour of the Strip. But in the end, all else is drowned out by the clatter of predetermined plot-points being hammered home. On the DVD: Extras include a commentary from Leder, and a 13-minute "making-of" documentary that includes cast and director interviews. None of it, though, tells us much we couldn't have gathered from the movie. The clean widescreen (1.85:1) print and the Dolby 5.1 sound deliver on quality, and come fully into their own in the all-out bravura finale--shameless tear-jerking on a grand scale. --Philip Kemp

Epic - Better than the book
This really is EPIC: It beats nearly all the very good stuff out there by a mile. Laugh, cry, cheer, wow! The book was good but the film is much better crafted. It keeps you better engaged by dropping a lot of the books narrative tricks keeping only the best of the narrative chopping forward in time. An all star cast really at the top of their game too and top rate production values all round.A keeper for my collection; candidate for top 10 stories of all time, great family film and lovely presentSTRONGLY RECOMMENDED

Cheesy but great
Maybe a little cheesy, but a great movie with a great cast, it definitely kept me glued to the screen to the end and what an ending! I am not usually a film crier, but this really got me. I really loved the idea of small act of kindness and especially the idea that they come from unexpected places (the child, the homeless drug addict, the alcoholic...) It is not as deep as I would have expected, but one that I would enjoy watching again.

Respect His Name
When will Jesus and his followers, ie Christians, be treated with the same level of respect as all others and not have to listen to blasphemy in what seems to be the majority of 21st Century films? Jesus came to redeem us from our sons not to be used as a swear word. Yet another otherwise good film whose makers forgot that.

This is honestly one of my favourite movies of all time
This is honestly one of my favourite movies of all time, and I feel it is greatly underrated. I gave this movie a 10/10 on IMDB as the plot and the fantastic quality of acting from start to finish by the whole cast is absolutely top notch. This movie will make you happy, angry and sad along the way and I thoroughly recommend it. Spacey was fantastic.

Excellent movie with a life lesson attached
I listened to a speech on 'Pay it forward' and after searching more about the concept, I found this on the internet. I had to watch it and was really glad I did. The ending had me in tears as it was genuinely moving and reminds us how ideas and action can change the world. A must watch for anyone looking for inspiration on how to do some good in the world.

Everybody should be made to watch this film
Some brilliant acting, great storyline. If everybody watched this film it would make people think about their everyday actions & hopefully become more charitable. I have had it done to me & I have indeed Paid it forward.

It uses an interesting concept which we could all embrace to our good - to the world's good
Bought it because I heard someone use it in a talk as an illustration. It uses an interesting concept which we could all embrace to our good - to the world's good. Yes it is a bit smaltzy at the end but it is a good family feel good film with a good message - what is not to like about that. Especially good for children as the young boy is the driving force of the film facing a lot of situations common to many.

Mediocre film gets five star rating
The film itself is okay, although emotional feel-good flicks with terrible endings are not usually my cup of tea. Three stars. Great performance from Kevin Spacey. Four stars. Wonderful song on the soundtrack, Calling All Angels. Five stars.
