It was great to find Sensai's Kim's (0sensai)
I very happy to find this publication from Sensai Kim. I study Shorinji Ryu Karate and it is difficult to find any books dedicated to Okinawan Kobudo. This is perfect reference for our style. The photos and text are sufficient to explain the kata. Definitely helpful for anyone studying our style.I wish wrote more of these books.

Great series
This is an excellent series of perhaps the most practiced kata in Kobudo. The photos are sequenced so that the kata may be learned pictorially, however, it is sometimes difficult to follow the faster moving sequencse, such as when the bo is spun around the body. More photos were needed to follow this kind of action, so here, the imagination needs to take over. That said, this is an excellent series in one book and can be used as a supplement for training with an expert in Kobudo, which is the way Kobudo should be studied regardless.

Excellent technical manual
This is the right book if you want to learn the old ways of doing the form directly from Okinawa.

must-have goldmine reference
These invaluable books were out-of print for years, and I had to pay over $150 to get all three. Thank Don Warrener for making the Kobudo series available again. You lucky ones don't have to search and pay top $$ as I did.

A Collection of Katas
With the exception of the techu there is a brief introduction to the weapon and very basic usage and then its on to the Katas (the Techu gets virtually nothing). The black and white photos are not very sharp and missing some important transitions so at times you are left wondering just how you get from 1 picture to the next. If you already know how to use the weapons then you probably can work things out and then you have a good list of katas to follow. It gives:-1 Bo kata2 Tonfa katas4 Sai katas1 Kama kata1 Techu kataThere is some interesting stuff in the katas but it is a bit lopsided towards the sai. Unfortunatley 3 of the sai katas are quite similar and I would have much prefered another Bo and Kama one instead.

For fan boys
Buy it to own a bit of history and preserve the art of kobudo. But without prior knowledge, you won't learn the weapons katas properly from this book. You won't find detailed instructions. You won't be given tips to visualize the imaginary opponent(s). You simply won't receive the richness of information that accompanies a technique passed down orally from master to student. The coverage in terms of the number of katas per weapon (1 bo, 1 kama, 1 techu, 2 tonfa, 4 sai) may also seem unbalanced but plans for additional volumes never came to be.

Glad to see Richard Kim's book available!
A great reference if you're a Kobudo practitioner who knows Kim's kata's and want a reference to clear up any questions.
