absolutely outstanding
This book is extremely well written. It deals with both the human side of the atrocities of war and the endearing love we humans have for our four legged companions, be they a family pet or a military working dog. This book is a must read. Factual events which occurred during the Japanese involvement in World War Two and the bravery of those that survived the malevolent treatment handed out to them by their captors. The life of Judy has its ups and downs and almost brings the reader to tears one moment and silent cheering for her actions the next. I could not put this book down.

A Truly Remarkable Book
I read this book hot on the heels of 'Arthur, the dog who crossed the jungle to find a home', an excellent page-turner about a remarkable dog in itself, but Judy is in a class of her own. Her story starts as a puppy in Shanghai in 1936 when she was taken on by a British gunboat crew as their mascot, and effectively ends with her liberation in 1945 (she was an official Prisoner of War) along with her human companions, from the brutality of a Japanese POW Camp, and their return to Britain whereupon she was awarded the Dickin Medal - the Animal VC. Quite how they survived their regular brushes with death, when so many of their fellow prisoners didn't, beggars belief. Their human/canine teamwork demonstrated just what a high level of mutual understanding our two species can have.

Love with courage.
The most touching story I've read in a long time. I love dogs and was so moved by the love, bravery and intelligence of Judy. Her sheer tenacity and endurance were unbelievable and her faithfulness never faltered. She deserves to have her story told. Would that I could have met her! I've never been a fan of war stories but the courage and suffering of the men in the story was heart-rending. I read it with a detailed atlas beside me to follow the geography of that part of the world in the second world war. Their fortitude and determination and united spirit of honour was beyond words, and their devotion to the protection of Judy moved me to tears. This book brings home to me the duty and selflessness of people defending others in war.

AMAZING YOU WILL NOT WANT TO PUT IT DOWN
Bought this for a friend for christmas and she has said she cannot put it down. It is one of the most amazing books she has read and the fact that it is a true story makes it all the more compelling. If you love dogs this book is a must to learn just how devoted these animals are to the humans that care for them and what they will go through to protect them. This dog selflessly put itself in constant danger to protect and help it's human friends. I can't wait to read it after her.

Thank You Mr Damien Lewis
