Lost in Translation [Blu-ray]

Hi, my name is Trem and i'm known for my comical reviews.This movie is as amazing as it's opening shot of Scarlett's arse! Ok, it's a shot of pure exploitation, but Christ alive! What a perfect rear end she has! The bottom shot even made the cover of the soundtrack album! Talk about how to shift the bleeders! I wouldn't care if the album had 30 minutes of white noise! I'd still buy it! But look - the film is a pure delight, with Bill Murray being the main protaganist. A simple story of loneliness, and companionship, where all the rules need not apply. I loved the simplicity of it all, and it stays with you. I wish Scarlett would stay with me! And now she can in this damn good blu ray/dvd. See it, experience it, and enjoy.

This is one of the few films I can watch over and over again. Especially if you're a middle-aged man who is fighting the infamous 'midlife' (or 'middle-age) crisis and keeps sighing to ease the emptiness in the chest, it may resonate with you more. Very cleverly made. I wonder how the dialogues are translated into other languages, like in the scene when a Japanese escort lady says 'lip' instead of 'rip' and Bob Harris (by Bill Murray) gets confused?The soundtracks played in the film are all very good indeed, especially 'Kaze o Atsumete' by Happy End. I want to watch it again!

I saw this fim not long after it came out on DVD and was deeply disappointed. I did not connect to either of the main protagonists and while it had its moments left me feeling cold.HOWEVER more than 10years down the line and with significantly more life experiance the film resonated with me in so many different ways. The relationship between Charlotte and Bob is so tender and funny as they both see their lives stagnate and/or fall apart in front of them that you can empothise with them.Tokyo looks stunning and surreal more like a magic kingdom than a city that exists in our place and time.Murray is outstanding and Johannsen is his Perfect foil.A stunning movie - the standout and defining moment being Murrays Karioke performance of 'More Than This'

Like all blu-rays when compared to watching the DVD version or an old video one watching this film is a clearer, more detailed experience and in many cases it's like looking at the film for the first time as the film stock used to transfer to Blu-Ray is usually "worked on" first to get as good a copy as possible.My taste in films may not be the same as yours so if you want to know about this film I suggest that you use the internet to find 2 or 3 reviews by experienced film reviewers and make your judgment whether or not to buy this film.I have watched over 600 films in my life and have a collection of over 200 Blu-Ray's and I rate this one 8/10.

One of my favorite movies! It has a great atmosphere in Tokyo, fantastic cinematography, great acting and a compelling story. I guess you know all of this already. I am here to comment on the blu-ray edition, and it is a bargain! Great aspect ratio is 1,85:1 which makes up the total widescreen picture on my LED TV. It really makes the difference and the soundtrack is pristine. Highly recommended!

5 stars for the movie, 3 stars for the dated Blu-ray transfer.It is still the best it has looked on a home format and it is might be limited by the quality of the source elements but I would like to think it could be improved. Maybe if criterion gets it or if it gets a 4k release.

This Film is my top 10 films. It's a gentle film about a foreign man going to Japan finding out how weird the Japanese life is and confusing the country is. It's a wonderful film if you like Bill Murray or you like Japan. I like both!

This is a sweet and subtle story in which Bill Murray kind of plays himself; an ageing movie star on assignment in Japan filming a whiskey commercial. He's not happy, and it isn't just the jet lag. He feels himself growing further and further apart from his wife and kids back home who seem only to exist through late night phone calls while they go about their daily routine, barely paying him attention in the process.At the same time, Charlotte (played by Johansson), another guest at the same hotel, seems to be realising she married the wrong guy, who's out all day every day photographing Japanese boy bands leaving her alone to turn things over and over in her mind. Eventually Bill and Charlotte notice each other. 'Alone' in the sky high hotel in a totally alien environment, they drift together.While it is one of my favourite films, I'm afraid I found the upgrade to Blu Ray a little disappointing. The movie transfer is very grainy. Not that I mind grain on film usually, as long as it doesn't distract. And it does here.

1 Stunde und 44 Minuten in denen relativ wenig passiert. Die Handlung ist, wenig spektakulär. Doch die Charmanz liegt gerade in diesen kleinen, feinen, ausgewählten Set Pieces: Ein Karaokeabend, ein Feueralarm, zu Zweit liegend im Hotelbett, ein Ausflug in einen buddhistischen Tempel, Schwimmen im Hotelpool, Whiskey trinken an der Bar, eine Begegnung im Fahrstuhl.Die beiden Hauptakteure Johannson und Murray strahlen gleichzeitig und subtil Eleganz und Humor aus. Die Chemie zwischen beiden ist unbeschreiblich; ein bisschen Liebespaar, ein bisschen Vater-Tochter, so respektvoll, irgendwie distanziert, aber auch voller Sehnsucht. Einsamkeit und Schönheit hüllen diesen Film in ein warmes, wohliges Licht. Ein absoluter Wohlfühlfilm und ein Glanzstück in der Filmografie beider Schauspieler."Broken Flowers" von Jim Jarmusch, auch mit Murray, ist ebenso empfehlenswert, wenn man den subtilen Charme Murray's schätzt.

A mio avviso il film più bello tra quelli realizzati da Sofia Coppola. Sa essere ironico e profondo allo stesso tempo. Stupendo.

監督・脚本・制作ソフィア・コッポラ、主演ビル・マーレイ、スカーレット・ヨハンソンによる、2003年発表作品。日本に出稼ぎにきた往年のハリウッドスターのボブと、夫の取材旅行についてきた若妻シャーロット。母国語が通じない国で思い煩い、疲れはてるなか、ふたりは出会います。日本にいるアメリカ人どうし、異国の地にいる孤独な者どうしだからこそ惹かれ合いながらも、それが一時の感情だとわかっているからこそ踏みこめない。そんな淡くほろ苦いロマンスが描かれます。監督コッポラいわく、本作の多くは彼女の実体験にもとづいているそうです。とくにシャーロットが夫からほったらかしにされるエピソードは、コッポラがスパイク・ジョーンズと結婚していたころ、日本のホテルに置き去りにされた経験が反映されているといいます（そう考えると、本作完成後に彼と離婚したのは示唆的）。ちなみにボブとシャーロットとの関係性について、監督が参考にしたのは『三つ数えろ』のハンフリー・ボガートとローレン・バコールとのこと。タイトルである「翻訳する過程で失われてしまうもの」とは、異なる言語どうしにおけるディスコミュニケーションを意味しており、グローバリズムのメタファーと解釈できると思います。交通網の発達により国どうしの物理的な距離が近づき、他文化や他民族が相互に流入する一方、その急速さゆえ、それらについての理解がおよんでいない。そのため他文化を、自文化の価値基準で理解しようとすることで「誤訳」してしまう。本作ではそれがユーモラスに戯画化されています。近代化やグローバル化を駆け足で進む東京が、舞台として選ばれたのは必然です。多文化や他国を理解する不可能性、そこに宿る諦観といったものは、F・F・コッポラという偉大な父親の仕事の都合で、世界中をめぐった経験から、S・コッポラがいたった認識なのかもしれません。次作『SOMEWHERE』でも同じようなことが描かれていました。ただ彼女の本質がより現れているのは、身近の人間もまた「異邦人」であり、彼らと自分には相互理解の絶望的な困難があるという悟りのように思えます。ボブとシャーロットはともに異国の地に降り立つことで、もっとも身近な家族とのあいだにですらコミュニケーションの決定的な断絶があると思い知らされるからです。そこからはじまり、相互理解への希望や努力を安直に模索するわけでもなく、あるいは相互理解の困難から逃避するわけでもなく、相互理解の不可能性を引き受けて異国から日常に戻ると示唆して終わる点において、当時（まだ30歳くらい！）コッポラが抱いた等身大の想いを感じることができます。また外国人の眼をとおして映し出された “Tokyo” を見ると、24時間眠ることなく猥雑な活気を発し続ける都市の姿をあらためて認識することができます。そのエネルギーにあてられてボブとシャーロットは眠ることができない。それが、たがいに伴侶をもつふたりの共犯関係をさらに強めるという物語上の意味も担っています。まさしく東京にいる異邦人どうしならでのロマンス。本作では手持ちカメラが使われており、人工的なライティングもなるべく用いられず、ときには無許可でゲリラ的に撮影されたシーンもあったそう。そのため全編をとおしてドキュメンタリックなタッチに仕上がっており、生々しい感触が伝わります。演技プランもそれに合わせてか、即興芝居が多く使われたといいます。日本人の描き方については賛否が分かれているようですが、言葉や文化が分からない国に放り出された異邦人の視点で描かれている物語なので個人的には気になりません。漠然としか知らない外国に旅行者として行ったとき、もともと持っている先入観でその国の人間を判断してしまうことはよくあるからです。劇中の日本人の姿もボブとシャーロットの眼からすると、そう見えたということでしょう（それ以前に劇中もっとも悪意をこめて描かれているのはハリウッド女優ですし、日本映画でも外国人の描き方がひどい作品はいくらでもあるので、おたがい様な気がします）。むしろ外国人の眼差しをとおした日本人像を、劇中で描かれる「誤訳」のひとつとしてとらえることも可能だと思います。もちろんビル・マーレイの魅力がたっぷりつまった作品なのだけど、それよりも眼を釘づけにされるのがスカーレット・ヨハンソンの存在。役の設定は20代半ばなのに、撮影時にはまだ17歳というのが信じられないほど、濃厚に漂う気だるい艶かしさ！自分のなかでは依然として本作が彼女のベストムービーです。
