My four and a half year old daughter is having a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy and when we told her, she began to weep. I bought her this book and it is a real game changer. Now she is asking to go for her surgery now and she is fascinated by the process.Dr. Bhatia has a very caring and reassuring tone in the book and gives good information on what to expect. She does not oversimplify and the real photos of the operating table and lamps intrigued my little girl (who is rather into science). I personally don't LOVE the illustrations, but my daughter finds them amusing. Additionally, at the end of the book, there is a blank page where the author invites the reader to draw a picture of themselves on the day of their surgery, stating that it is a very special day. It's a very nice touch. Also, there are two pages with a child's writing that sums up the book. Another nice touch. The book ends with the child (Iggy) going home after surgery. My kid has to stay overnight so I am glad I bought this book in conjunction with FRANKLIN GOES TO THE HOSPITAL, where the main character has a different medical issue but has to stay overnight as well. It's good for comparison and cross referencing with THE SURGERY BOOK.Four stars for me is quite good and I rarely give five stars. I would have preferred better illustrations and more photos of cool medical gear. Perhaps the author could have tied the two brothers mentioned at the beginning with the rest of the story, but that is a technicality that is not important for the purpose of this book. The purpose is to soothe and reassure a frighten child bound for surgery and it got the job done quite nicely.

Helped a 3 year old prepare for surgery well
My 3 year old needed to have her tonsils and adnoids removed. I bought this book as soon as I found out, while we waited for insurance approval. The book goes through each step the child can expect to experience the day of the surgery in a story fashion. The pictures have the cartoon-looking main character, Iggy, super-imposed on realistic pictures of things like a hospital bed, the operating room, etc. In the story, Iggy is going to have hia tonsils out and the whole story is related from his perspective. I waited until we had read it a few times befire telling her she would have hers out, too. It helped her on the day of surgery, too. We took the book with us and I pointed to the parts of the book that were happening or that each doctor or nurse was talking about. Her anxiety decreased each time. The book affirms fear, too, saying that big people and little people feel scared before surgery and it's normal. Amazing purchase that helped a 3 year old prepare for surgery.

Cute and informative book
It's a cute book and my kids really like it. It helped my 2.5 year old understand aspects of his upcoming tonsillectomy. I personally didn't love the repeated description of tonsils as "marshmallows" as that's extremely confusing to a young child. It can also be a little confusing to know who the text at various points is meant to be talking to/ about but that wasn't a big deal.

Best Book for Kids before surgery! (from a mom and nurse perspective)
I bought about 3 books prior to my son's surgery (he was 2 1/2 years old) and although this is somewhat geared towards getting tonsils removed, it was really good at showing my son what to expect (he had a different procedure). The best part of this book is the real pictures they use to depict all of the operating room equipment (ex. mask, lights, IV). And most of the book is shown from the point of view of the patient (child), so for example there was a page where it looked like all the lights in the OR but from the perspective of a child laying down on the OR bed. This book was my son's favorite and he was actually really excited to put the mask on in the OR instead of being scared. I know that is thanks in large part to this wonderful book.I really recommend this book!Tip: If you have a young child (toddler) who is going to surgery make sure to read the books to them 1-2 days before and not too far ahead in advanced. This helps minimize toddler's anxieties.

Get this
Look no further, this is the book to help with a child going through surgery. My 3 year old was having surgery and I read this a week before then a few days before. I referenced back to this book a few times when we were driving to the surgery and when we were in the waiting room. He could relate to the character. And after surgery when we got home read it a few days later for similarities in care. Your child is worth it. I also got the Bernstein bears, I like that one for what a " tour" if a hospital would be. This book is the actual preperation for a surgery, prep, anesthesia, recovery.

Genius! Love love love
I love this book! My son had his tonsils out this year and it help both of us so much! I loved the words the authors used to explain the surgery in a kid friendly way. My son loved that he could relate to him. At the end of the book your child can write about their experience. We read the book a few days before the surgery so he could have time to think about it. Then we read it the night before. He wanted to bring the book to the hospital which was great because he showed it off to all the different doctors and nurses.Everyone loved it!

Fantastic!
Kudoes to Dr. Shivani Bhatia for writing this book. Bought it for my granddaughter prior to her tonscillectomy. She had me and her parents read it over and over again and even took it with her to the hospital to show all the doctors. The best was going from cartoon characters to the real thing. She sailed through the surgery without a hitch. The Doctors and staff were so impressed that they said they planned to get the book for their office and encourage parents to get it for their children. It doesn't get much better than that for a "proud grandmother" at her perfect choice of a book to ease the scariness of surgery for her grandchild. There are many adjectives that can be used for this book - just get it and you can brag too!!

Good book helped prepare my child for surgery.
A really lovely book to explain to little ones having their tonsils out what to expect. I bought this for my daughter and it really did help explain what was going to happen to her. This is an American book though so didn't completely transfer to the NHS situation we experienced and also created some expectations that weren't met but I was able to talk through this with my child and explain that there might be some slight differences to her experience. It was good though to help work through some of the anxiety of the situation and helped prepare her well for the situation.

Good Buy
Bought because my 3 and a half YO son was to undergo a tonsil operation. I must say, the storybook is good for children as well as adults, as all steps included of the operation were shown on the book (except the doctor's aquarium). But my son came in touch with everything that was going to happen to him, and went to the operation very calm, at least until the last moment, but I believe it would have gone worse with no information at all. A good buy.
