Buy An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Uniforms of World War I: An Expert Guide to the Uniforms of Britain, France, Russia, America, Germany and ... 650 Colour Illustrations (Military Uniforms) Illustrated by Jonathan North, Jeremy Black MBE (ISBN: 9780754823407) from desertcart's Book Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. Review: Helpful for artists wanting references of uniforms - Item arrived fast and in great condition. Exactly as described and is very informative of the presented subject with many great illustrations of the bigger (and some smaller) nations involved in the First world war. Review: Most worthwhile book I’ve bought in a long time - This book is pretty much fantastic. Great value for money. It is packed with information, it is far more than an illustrated guide, it is also a history book of the First World War. Certainly there is room to improve, I would have liked to have seen the uniforms of the Royal Marines or the German Seebattaillione (which is mentioned in the introduction), and I felt some countries like Italy, Japan and especially the Ottoman Empire were not given fair coverage. But overall highly useful.

Great reference book. But, some strange ommisions.
As a scale modeller enjoying the current wave of figure, vehicle and aircraft kits, this has been a valuable reference. It has paid for itself many times over. The individual pictures of the figures are of large size, clear and beautifully painted. The accompanying text is also very useful as it gives information on the uniforms, equipment and webbing and of course any weaponry if shown. I particularly liked the inclusion of lesser known combattant nations. It has been very well researched. However, there is one curious ommision in this book. Naval personnel. Very strange given the number of naval encounters in the war and their importance in the conflict. Many even expanded into other fields. Zeppelins were part of the German Imperial Navy. France, Britain and Germany each had Naval air arms as did many others. The RNAS even went to war in armoured cars on the Western front and as far afield as Russia. Admittedly, this would have needed 2 or more pages for each nation and would have increased the price of the book. I would have happily paid for it to see them included. This though is still a fantastic book and a great single reference. Unfortunately, if you're looking for sailors, this is not the book you're looking for.

Good source of reference
My intention in purchasing this book was to have a reference source for making scale model figures; it has been a sound investment. The illustrations are excellent and the narrative; although brief, provides the appropriate background to what is essential a comprehensive guide to the variety of military uniforms worn during the First World War. Value for money is very good, you would have to buy a series of comparable books to gain the same amount of information. Thoroughly recommended, especially to fellow model makers.

With some illustrated books like this, the quality of images can vary - not so with The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Uniforms of Word War 1. I was impressed with the clarity and colour of each and every example and appreciated the wide variety of national uniforms included in this work. It is a great resource for anyone who needs good colour references for gaming or photo colourization, as well as photo identification for research purposes. I am very pleased with this book, which was a very welcome gift!

We actually bought this to cut a few pages out for a visual project on WW1 uniforms for a Social Studies class. Overall very impressed with the quality of the images and extremely intriguing information as well.
