I've had this for a several months now with no issues. This unit is easy to setup and configure. The UI is intuitive and clean. It's pretty much set and forget except for the occasional update of firmware, which I choose to do manually.

I was very hesitant to go with Synology due to their brief "Our hard drives only" phase, to the point that I said I will consider any other brand before I go with them. So I did try a couple others, one of which was way more powerful, but the software on both felt like they were still in early beta testing and there was little documented support, so you had to rely on a random reply in Reddit that hopefully had the correct answer. The Synology software, however, is very polished and easy to navigate. The options in the apps are also relatively easy to understand. It was very easy to setup, is quiet and easy to maintain. Definitely recommend this over other brands if you want something that is easy to use out of the box.

Good device, but you'll be heavily limited by its weak hardware and closed-source software. It doesn't support some UPS (uninterruptible power supplies), you won't be able to get video transcoding running on it, and there are plenty of other limitations too. Even a large number of torrents will noticeably load up the memory and it becomes noticeably less responsive. QuickConnect works very poorly and slowly, so it's basically useless except in rare cases. Synology Drive also turned out to be very slow — while uploading files, the entire system (Windows/macOS) freezes up, like it's some piece of software from 2002. So Synology Drive ended up being unusable too — I had to delete everything. Keep this in mind. Honestly, I'm more frustrated that I spent money on it instead of just building my own NAS from the start.

For those doing "home backups" if you have anything precious that you couldn't bear with loosing then, in addition, I would also setup backups to the cloud as an extra layer of safety. This way it's less likely a fire or similar will cause you to permanently loose precious data. Pros: 1. Packaging: The shipping package seemed top-notch -- or at least close to it. The product itself isn't super heavy so the packaging concentrated on protecting the device from external bumps-and-bruises. 2. Install Guide: There was an included installation guide that is good enough to get the job done. It was fairly easy to get the HDDs in the holder and installed. Everything else was also fairly straight forward with the installation itself. 3. Web Configuration tool: I had problems with the configuration application as it never found the device. Fortunately the Web Config tool held my hand enough to get the job done. It could have been more user friendly but it was still good enough for a basic setup and to do what was needed. Cons: 1. The included instructions were limited to a basic, but just good enough, installation guide. For a few hundred dollars [without any HDDs] I would have expected additional [NAS for dummies :) ] style documents to have been included for free. 2. I had some problems initially with the configuration application that is downloadable. I wound up needing to use WebConfig instead as I never got the application to find the equipment on my network even when it was on the same [non-firewalled] switch.
