This Works, and I Can't Believe I Didn't Learn This Five Years Ago
BUY THIS BOOK. NOW.Five years ago I started having heartburn. Nothing really helped, and a few times it was so bad I had to go the ER for morphine--yes, that's how bad it was. Since then I have been on Prevacid every day, carafate, and other meds. It triggered the onset of adult Asthma and more medicines. GERD, the doctors told me. Stop coffee (one of the few joys in life), wine (another joy), etc. they told me. This is permanant, you will always be on medicine, etc. Forever. I bought into that, especially since my now ex as an RN told me the docs were right. I just didn't buy it, but didn't know what to do.No matter what I did heartburn was only a meal away. Last Thanksgiving it hit again--for seven weeks. I missed weeks of work, had every test you can imagine, slept sitting up on the sofa, and spent most nights crawling around on my hands and knees in agony. All the doctor could tell me was that my stomach lining was "enflamed" and I had to give up everything (food-wise, coffee, wine, any and all spices, etc.). And the medicines--my god they had me on a counter-full of RXs. When I slowly began eating again (went from Boost shakes to solid foods, it was an English muffin, slice of toast, etc.) CARBS. Yes, they recommended "bland" foods like . . . bread. And the cycle started again.I had about two months of some discomfort, a little pain, lots of nausea, and then another two days of terrible pain a couple weeks ago. Someone recommended this book. I bought it. Read it in 2 hours (the first 2/3s is a background explanation of his theory, and the last 1/3 is about what to eat, in what portions, and how to regulate your meals vis a vis your symptoms). It is a simply theory: Certain carbs at certain intake levels create a lot of gas that forces acid into the esophagus (one type of pain, typical "heartburn") and other carbs digest in your small intestine and the gasses expand past your stomach sphincter and slosh acid and intestinal waste back into your stomach (another sort of pain, and this keeps your stomach inflamed.)In this book, the author has you "decompress" from an average of 400 grams of net carbs a day to . . . 25! (When you start becoming aware of carbs and what you eat every day, you will be absolutely shocked.) This is not as hard as it sounds--especially when you have had enough of the pain. I did it. And the author was right. He said it takes a couple days and you will start to feel a lot better. He was right. And it was exactly two days. My symptoms vanished, completely. After a week of feeling great and eating about 25 - 75 grams, I upped it to 100. (Diet essentially beef jerkey, dry roasted peanuts, dried fruits, fish, certain veggies, dried coconut, etc.) Still no problems. I started drinking low-acid coffee. Feel great. I am going to up it 25 grams a week until my body says "Wait a minute, buddy. That's enough." When that happens, I will back down another 25 net carb grams, and live there. This is what the author recommends. To be clear: the definition of net carbs varies, but this author means Total Carbohydrates, less fiber and sugar (this is how the labels are set up, so it is easy to figure out). These carbs are important because of the gas they create.BOTTOM LINE: If you suffer from stomach pain, esophageal pain (heartburn), it could be many things. Get checked, completely. If they have ruled out ulcers, cancer, gall bladder, etc., and if they tell you it is GERD, etc., then bet your bottom dollar it is the carbs you are eating, the gas they create, and the back flow of acid it forces into the wrong places (and this is what may have triggered your ulcer, if you have one, in the first place!). It has been about 10 days now, and I feel great. I had a glass of wine and coffee yesterday, together--nothing.All those weeks and all my doctor had to do was tell me to cut all the carbs and in two days . . . I don't know if he knows about this, but I am going to tell him. Alas . . . heavy meds and tests make more money for the industry.BUY THIS BOOK. SPREAD THE WORD. IT WORKS.

Good Advice, Too Expensive
I think this can be practical advice, but I don't think the cost of the book is justified by the amount of time the author took to write it and/or his expertise. It seems like the author went on a diet for a year, and so far it was working for him. I would just be concerned that sometimes low carb diets can create insulin resistance, but that shouldn't discourage someone from adopting a healthier diet, and the typical American diet is way too high in carbohydrates.I would like this book to have reviewed large studies and have followed persons on low carb diets who are using them to treat GERD to find out its effectiveness after five years, ten years, etc.I would just say that I think you can draw the same or similar conclusions without using this book and save your money. But if the book was $5, it'd be fine for what it is.

excellent advice that works
Excellent book on curing heartburn and GERD without resorting to the pills pushed by conventional medicine and the billion dollar pharmaceutical companies. I bought this after a few years of recurrent acid reflux (and having a painful ulcer occur) and a recent month of an episode which led me to take larger and larger doses of a popular GERD drug, Prilosec, as well as sucking down multiple doses of Gaviscon each day. After a month on the conventional, popular drugs, I was having constant headaches and my GERD was just as bad as when this episode began. I also felt just lousy all over, weak and tired too. I bought this book desperate to find some help, read it in two days, and started following the instructions right away, including following a low-carb Paleo diet and taking the NOW Super Enzymes with meals. And yes, it worked. I felt better in just a few days and after a few weeks I feel great. i rarely have any acid reflux at all at this point and when I do, it's because I ate something at a restaurant or a party that took me off the low-carb Paleo routine. My digestion has also improved in multiple ways. I feel good now. The author provides some great tables in the book which provide carb counts for many foods. Very useful. If you are like me and have driven around in the middle of the night at times looking for a drugstore that is open 24 hours a day, just so you can buy acid reducer pills, try getting off those pills and following the advice in this book instead. You may find, like me, that you feel 100% better very quickly. Everyone is unique but this approach surely worked for me.

Finally, a cure!
This book really delivers. I have always had a sensitive stomach and this evolved into reflux as I got older. I'm only in my late 20s and I was taking acid reducers (like Pepcid, Omeprazole, etc.) every day. I was getting very nervous as the pills were working less and less, and nothing else I was trying helped. I might also mention that because of taking acid reducers, I managed to get bad bacteria in places I should not have and was diagnosed with SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth). After being desperate for months and feeling awful everyday, I searched the internet for the hundredth time to find a cure, and this time, this book popped up. I got nervous when after two days I was still having heartburn, but after four days - no more heartburn! It goes just like the book says. You can indulge in some higher amounts of carbs here and there, but you'll likely get heartburn. No worries, just get back on the low carb wagon and you're all set. Incidentally, I've lost some weight and my low carb meals keep me full much longer. I am so thankful for this book. I highly recommend it.**Update: 9/24/12 - Unfortunately, the low carb way hasn't been helping these days. Based on a lot of research, some folks get complete relief with low carb, and others even get worse. I've become one of the latter, so just a warning, your mileage may vary.

A different but more effective approach
Takes a different approach to most books on this subject which, in the main, recommend cutting out fatty foods, onion, citrus, tomatoes, coffee etc. and not bending down or lying flat! Such a common problem that there are many weird and wonderful remedies out there! In short though, all suggestions to 'manage', rather than cure, the problem (in the process severely restricting your lifestyle) and which, in my case, made no difference at all. This book suggests that heartburn/acid reflux may be caused by too many carbs (including good ones) which ferment in the intestine to create undue pressure on the stomach forcing the sphincter muscle to release acid/bile into the oseophagus in susceptible individuals. An interesting theory which makes a lot of sense in my view. My problem only started when I began regularly having porridge, bananas, home-made beany soups and all the usual healthy things which are currently recommended for a balanced diet.I have cut back on carbs now for less than a week and the problem has nearly gone (back to eating onions, tomatoes, lemon juice, coffee). Definitely worth trying and much better than having to resort to medication/surgery if this can be avoided. Added bonus is that you will definitely lose weight reliably, another risk factor for this condition. Highly recommend the 'New High Protein Cookbook' by Dr Charles Clark for people who want to know more about the low-carb diet - his approach is more moderate, sensible and do-able than many others.

Heartburn cured:Miracle Diet
Very brief overview of what is essentially the ketogenic diet .There was too much preamble and very little substance to the main subject .

pretty good
After going down all the wrong roads to cure my GERD, I found the low carb diet advocated dramatically decreased my symptoms and allowed me to stop my PPI medication in a week. Very helpful.
