From Hot War to Cold War...
The U.S. Navy finished the Second World War with a huge inventory of destroyers. The needs of the Cold War called many of these vessels back into service. Some would be extensively modified with new weapons systems. The changing requirements of the Cold War would trigger the construction of a few additional classes of so-called gun destroyers. Experienced historian Mark Stille has the story in this Osprey New Vanguard series book. The author moves efficiently through the different classes of destroyers, their capabilities, and any subsequent modifications. Experimentation was the order of the day, not all of it was successful. The text includes a good selection of period photographs and modern illustrations of ship types, including some in action. Well recommended to students of the Cold War history of the U.S. Navy.
