Photographing Men: Posing, Lighting, and Shooting Techniques for Portrait and Fashion Photography : Rojas, Jeff: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Groundbreaking book - Jeff is a great photographer and educator who has been concentrating on a niche, emerging area of photography - photographing men. This is a ground breaking book being the first exclusively designed to teach the complexities of photographing a variety of men. Jeff keeps in mind that this has commercial implications and so the tone and pace of the book can provide assistance to all skill levels. This book is a must for anyone who wants to do more than photograph men and instead wants to photograph men so they look great. Review: Invaluable information and advice. - If you are considering photographing men as an option in portrait photography, this is the book to buy. Iโve looked at other books on this subject but they are far too homoerotic. Jeff Rojaโs book is spot-on the subject and you could study it in public without being suspected of gay tendencies.

Not as direct as it could be - Could be better
I have gained some insights from the book, and it has confirmed many of the feelings I already had about photographing men (including myself), but it seemed to lack incisiveness.

Great book
Great book, plenty of useful advice One of the most complete books of photography I've read, relative to the topic treated inside Jeff Rojas is a great instructor and explains in a very clear and plain way all the aspects necessary to get good images, from posing to lighting, interaction with the subject and analysis of the same, and finally postprocessing. Useful not only to learn how to photograph male subjects, but also for gaining more insight in studio and portrait photography

Please see my comments for "How to Photograph women," which prompted me to buy this book also. It is a book which is full of hints and tips based on Jeff's personal experience of shooting in many genres over the years. It is not a book of standard poses and lighting set ups but one which tells you how to get the best pictures of individuals by treating them as individuals.

All Filler and No Fluff.
So often I have bought a photography book and been left somewhat underwhelmed by the contents. Often more imagery than any really meaty teaching. Yet, this is not the case. I have now a somewhat battered copy of the book as I am have used it, referenced it and routinely referred back to it. A must for any photographer at any level.

Super Book, well worth reading if you do any kind of portraiture.
Fabulous book. I have been following Jeff on Youtube and Creative Live for quite a while and this book really does cover in detail very useful information. Unlike some books it isn't full of waffle, i cannot imagine anyone not learning something from it. I shoot mainly women but so much of what is in this book is transferable

Good read, as it can be difficult to pose men Jeff explanes process and work flow in basic terms. Lighting, posing and camera setting are all laid out for any level of photographer.

As a member of the "Hunkassaurus Rex crew" (or as some others more eloquently, yet somewhat less excitingly call us: The Male Sex Club), you'd be forgiven to think I'd be more interested in swooping in a female companion, stripping her down and spraying (easy tiger!) light all over her next to the nearest north face window. However, over the last year or so I'd subconsciously found myself with a portfolio biased far more toward Hunkn'ass than Boobn'ass... Here's why... It hadn't even dawned on me that every single class I'd studied had been with a focus on a female model, I'd been so detached from the gender and focused far more on the lighting, composition, post processing etc that when it finally became time to get work I'd realised that I found my knowledge of posing was all for women. I found posing women difficult, uncomfortable and somewhat awkward due to my own lack of knowledge on the subject and also a somewhat lack of desire to do what was already being done by those around me. That's when I got booked to shoot a male model in London and decided to make a mad dash for the closest thing I could find on male modelling, posing, composition and post processing, Jeff Rojas's work on CreativeLive and now, this wonderful book. I ordered the digital version of the book so that I could get it on time for the shoot, though due to an unfortunate error in the conversion I actually ended up missing the book and had to do the shoot blindly (without the book's knowledge). You know what? It went great, I felt far more comfortable working with male models than I did females though a few things still needed work... I wasn't sure of how to TRULY understand how to make someone look and feel their best, I just felt I was getting close when it came to working with male models. Jeff's book finally came through and I sat down with a cup of tea to start reading. I'm a little over half way through and already have to go back to the start and refresh, the amount of information Jeff throws at you is truly unbelievable. He mentions things I'd have never even thought about consciously and perhaps even ever. Do you have any idea how to light or dodge and burn a heart shaped face to make it look it's best? What about faces that are Oblong? Square? Circular? Triangle? No me either... until now that is! What about dealing with baldness? Larger faces? Beards? Lean men? Bigger men? Short men? Tall men? How to make sure a suit is fitting correctly? What position of the head says about emotion? How to place a hand across a stomach that says "Vulnerable" and not "I'm hungry"? I'm only half way through and all of these questions have not only been answered thoroughly but they've been so awesomely answered that I feel as though I could hold a mini masterclass on the subject tomorrow! Make absolutely no mistake here. Not only is Jeff a guy with an incredible fetish for triangles and men, but he also REALLY knows his stuff and openly shares it with you in treasure chest loads (that's not a euphemism). I know for a fact that my photography has improved dramatically because of this book and the knowledge contained within. Pick it up, absorb it and get ahead of the market for photographing the new generation of men. Just, do it.

Men are near on 50% of the humanity! But too often we take Men for granted when photographing them - only giving scant attention to the poses whereas we dwell over the finest of details for women. This book helps to overcome that and treat the guys as respected clients.

Great and simple book for posing men. Eazy to understand and use in real llive shooting. Great exemples of poses.
