Pure Telly Joy
Every once in a while a series comes along that manages to grab hold of you and transport you into a world you simply never want to leave, with characters you come to love and know that you will never forget. Never did I think that world would be a little red Fiat 500L and those characters would be the Assistant Manager and "Promotion Representative" of a fictional Manchester supermarket. In the hands of the tremendous Peter Kay and the truly wonderful Sian Gibson, whose chemistry will surely become the stuff of telly legend, the daily commute of two "ordinary" people, John Redmond and Kayleigh Kitson, becomes the most extraordinary, hilarious, human, life-affirming, poignant, heartwarming and heartbreaking imaginable. We're with them every step of the way as these colleagues and casual acquaintances are initially thrown together via a work enforced car sharing scheme and slowly find that far from merely a practical necessity or a chore, it becomes a life-changing experience for them both. It also becomes clear as their journeys increase and they share everything from the mundane to the deeply personal and often moving, that these Car Share buddies may have just found their soulmate. The show is filled with comical moments that will live long in the memory and are destined to become classics. What sets the series apart though, is that alongside the perfect one liners, comical stories, power ballads and pop belters, some brilliant supporting characters and inspired sight gags, are moments when the sheer humanity of these two characters just takes your breath away. These moments are never awkward or forced. They're not sickly sweet. They feel utterly real and never contrived, in a way so many shows from all genres try desperately for but very seldom achieve. This show can fill you with sheer happiness and yet can punch you in the gut with such force you're left reeling. Car Share is that most precious of things, a perfectly polished gem. An extraordinary achievement in writing, performance and production. More importantly, it's an absolute, unforgettable joy.

Such a warm, funny series!
Car Share is one of those shows I've been told to catch up on, but haven't got around to until now. Now I've finished the first series, I only wish I'd caught up on it sooner. I hope to have a full in-depth review of the series up soon on my own film and TV review site (link in my Amazon profile), but in summary:The format is remarkably simple - six episodes of supermarket assistant manager John and sales rep Kayleigh on their way into and coming home from work. All you need is Peter Kay, Sian Gibson, a car and a good script for the show to work ... and it certainly does. The show, as well as John and Kayleigh themselves feel so warm and natural to watch. It doesn't feel like you're watching two actors, it genuinely feels like two people on their way to work. It's quite a gentle comedy, but throughout these six episodes, it produced plenty of huge laughs from me. Because they often listen to the radio on their way into work, there's also a fair amount of music and pop culture references in the series. Not all of these landed with me, but that's more because my music knowledge is terribly lacking. However, if your music knowledge is better than mine (I almost guarantee it is), then you should be able to enjoy most of them. But still, this is a brilliant show, and I'll soon be making my way through Series 2!

This will make you laugh
Peter Kay has appeared in very funny TV shows (Phoenix Nights, Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere) and this is no exception. If you are a fan of English comedy (and I don't mean the political garbage being churned out now by pc comedians and writers) then this is a must. It will have you laughing and the acting is excellent.
