School Ties

I Am a Woman...I was middle class...I wanted college...my mother told me when I was 7 if I wanted to go to college I would have to find my own way for my father will not help any of us to go to college. I was a tomboy...I knew if I played sports w/the guys that would give me the edge that I needed to be a great athlete. I took my 8th Grade GirlsBasketball Team to an All Win NO Loss Season....w/out Me they would've not accomplish this, yet I wasn't the Captain of the Team. I had to go to college outside of our township....a place high school looked down upon...I wasn't aware of this mentality till I got there. Every game...I was in the papers...my jr. yr my parents divorced I lost my family home had to attend jr yr in a different state. My Sr. yr made it back to my high school. I had to work...I couldn't go out for Volleball & the coach retaliated by spreading I was gay I was furiated & threatened to sue if he didn't retract that lie. Major University in Chicago gave me a full 4yr basketball scholarship...the coach wanted it to go to another person b'cuz he couldn't get me to physically take out key players of teams we played against. I don't play that way. They told him it is only for Me. in 1980...girls didn't have the same rights as guys. Guys don't need a parental signature...no one can take their scholarships away...but us Women...we didn't have that right. My father refused to sign...no amount of teachers, parents, scouts, superintendant of schools...nothing would get him to give me what I worked so friggen hard to have....what I had to overcome....what all was taken. I tell you...prejudices are real mental illnesses & it doesn't matter what type of prejudice it is...it's all horrifically destructive. What some ppl will do especially when there is jealousy & I had to deal w/that too especially by my 8th grade teachers who thought I didn't deserve what I worked for....that it should be the more prominent kids...one teacher went as far as to say I didn't turn in my homework I was to be sitting on the bench the next game. but my class all stood up for Me & told my coach the truth. Coach took into the hallway...said knows that teacher is lying...sit out 1 game...and assured Me...this will never happen to me again. I tell you this....what has gotten me thru my entire life...what you got inside of you is all you really got in this life. Betrayal is far worse than rape...whether you betray someone or you betray yourself....you will never get that part of yourself back. This movie is an excellent teacher of this. This movie had it all...prejudice....betrayal...the ugliness of mental illness that comes with prominent families. In the end of this movie....Righteousness Prevailed. In the late 60's when we were getting our soldiers home & stopped the Vietnam war...and Nixon sent in soldiers at Kent State University & started shooting students...first school shooting in the history of USA....We All Said...We Are Alone...Its Up To Us...We HAVE to Be There For Each Other. Hitch hiking was very safe to do....for We Were There For One Another....everyone was helped no matter who they were. This film needs to be seen for todays generations so they can take the baton from our hands & continue this journey back to us across the finish line. Watch this movie....show & tell your families & friends about it. w/the covid 19 threat...we are helping each other...feeding one another...etc....the heart of this movie is the Heart of Americans. No more privilege living...no more taking from everyone & having govt officials & the wealthy giving their kids all the breaks & we pay for their education bills. No More..!!! 5 Stars on this Movie....I deeply encourage all....don't skip this movie....watch it...and watch it again & again. For in life...Life will test Your Soul...the Condition of Your Soul....best be ready so you don't fail...if you stagger....you can always recover if you will follow thru w/what is right. Wish you all the best & the best of success. Know Thyself is the Greatest Gift one can ever give to themselves.

Imagine that you excel academically but you have to hide a part of your identity while attending a high-end Catholic school? And when it was revealed, you learned who liked you anyway? And who didn't?Imagine being in an environment where people make remarks about that identity, cutting it down, judging, and making jokes based on stereotypes and/or hateful lies.That's what the main character experienced while attending an elite Catholic High School in his senior year experienced. He had to live with classmates who often treated him this way.The story was a little slow for me., but it really picked up in the last hour.

Terrific story that is well worth your time. Fabulous cast. Terrific screenplay. A GEM!!

This picture has an all-star cast and excellent goals, but its outstanding but overbearing message against intolerance detracts significantly from those features. David is encouraged to keep his Jewish origins hidden from his peers and professors after obtaining a football scholarship to a famous prep school in the 1950s.Because of his football ability, he rapidly establishes himself as the school's big man. However, when his Jewish heritage is revealed, his worst fears are fulfilled, and his friends begin to threaten him with violence and publicly mock him.The guys deliver terrific performances, but the script falls short of a challenging story. This is a strange mix of decent storytelling, horrible writing contrivances, and lies in the basic notion so blatant that they undermine whatever social seriousness intentions the film may have.

Love seeing young Brendan Fraser in a dramatic role. Facing anti semitism and spoiled privileged set. Informative, not violently hateful. The have and have nots. Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Cole Hauser as teens.

I've loved Mr Fraser since I first saw this movie. One of his earlier serious roles, it allowed him to flex his muscles as a dramatic actor, which he did rather well. He shared the screen with the likes of Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris O'Donnell, and Cole Hauser, addressing anti-semitism, racism, elitism, and peer pressure, to name a few.Another of Mr Fraser's underrated films, yet I would still recommend it to one and all.

Good movie that I had never seen before. It has several well-known actors in it when they were very young...Brendan Fraser Chris O'Donnel, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon.

School Ties is a reasonably enlightening tale of anti-semitism at a top high school in Massachusetts in the 1950s, but in the end it doesn't quite get enough depth, being too focused on the drama to feel like real life. However on its central theme it is good. It is surprising, perhaps, just how prevalent the prejudice was, and you certainly don't warm to many of the kids on show. As someone who, like Brendan Fraser's character, went to a public school on a scholarship and was bullied, not for being Jewish but for being gay, I can certainly say the picture is true. It seems extraordinary that the school's code of honour was like it was, really, and it seems to me that many of the values that used to be instilled, both in the US and here, were completely wrong. You hope things have improved since the early 80s, and I imagine they have to an extent, but the problems of education still face us and the wider world ... As far as this film is concerned, for anyone who is demanding of cinema it is likely to prove a bit two-dimensional, and is far from the subtlety of, say, Louis Malle's Au Revoir Les Enfants, or the intellectual substance of Another Country. The most interesting thing about it is seeing these actors: Fraser, Matt Damon (both outstanding), Ben Affleck, and Chris O'Donnell in some of their very first roles. There is certainly no shortage of good looks in the film (hence the fourth star, for me), but otherwise the visuals are quite dull and muted brown, without the poetry of Malle in the film mentioned above (the music, by Maurice Jarre, lifts it a bit). In spite of this, it is worthwhile if only to bring home how ready many people are to accept the unacceptable unquestioningly if enough people around them are doing so. It's not a comfortable thought but it is useful to be reminded that it probably is the case.

Could not play it in Ireland it didn't say in advertisement clearly was a waste of money very disappointed

I expected this film to a fairly standard vehicle for up and coming actors Brendan Frasier, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck but it was a pretty good film, they are all very young so the acting is a bit naive but a good story line that is well directed gives these up and coming A-listers a push in the right direction.Well worth a watch

A thoughtful film about anti semitism, first love and coming of age. Great for spotting some now middle aged big stars! Brendan Fraser is a great actor. Way better than the average teen flick.
