Q: Is this kit for cross stitch or tapestry i.e. diagonal stitches?

Hi, it's meant for tapestry. I don't think there would be enough wool for cross stitch.

Q: Is the background a blank canvas or has a print on it?

It is blank, the words are stitched as well

Q: I have now examined it and am confused about the colours-the colour code on the canvas shows 31 colours but the threads show 33 and all are 3-digits

The colours have a longer digit number which when referred to the chart gives the number used on the guide picture. On the bars of strands a single strand indicates a separate skein. Some chart numbers are a combination of two colours
