The Best Sweet Potato Chip I've Tasted
Look, you and I both know that we are deluding ourselves into thinking that anything fried and salted is a "healthy snack." If you want a healthy snack, eat some carrots, or an apple, or any number of actual fruits and vegetables in their natural form. Okay, so those options sound about as likely to fulfill the snack craving as a bowl of sand? How about a nice sweet potato chip then? That's healthy right? A sweet potato is a vegetable, I guess.Let's face it, sweet potatoes have a way better PR firm working for them than regular potatoes. Every bougey restaurant serves some form of "sweet potato fries" and tries to convince you they are somehow better than regular old "potato" fries. I have never had a sweet potato fry that ever held up against the most basic of regular French fry. Every time I order them, I am always disappointed. They seem like a good idea after a convincing plug by the waitress; but when they arrive, I always feel duped and that I should have just gone with my gut. But hey, where sweet potato stuff lacks in flavor profile it makes up for in exoticness and elitism. "Oh you have to try the sweet potato fries with the aioli mayonnaise (for the record, no aioli mayonnaise has ever come close to regular old kethup)."Same holds for a sweet potato chip. You won't find a sweet potato chip on the Earth that can compete against the most basic gas station off brand potato chip. Or at least that is what my normal disposition would be. These Jackson's Carolina BBQ sweet potato chips are really good. Dare I say, surprisingly good to someone who has a natural distrust of anything "sweet potato." They have a solid "crunch" to them, like a kettle chip, but are not cut overly thick, like some of those offerings. The BBQ flavor is unique. It has a hint of spice and just the right amount of "tang." My wife, who is a passionate sweet potato proselytizer, raved about them too. Sheepishly, I might have to admit that I want to try their other flavors, especially the Spicey Taptio. So have Jackson's Sweet Potato Chips changed my mind about the whole sweet potato industry? No. I still think in twenty years we will look back at it as a stupid fad. But if I were rolling down the street in my Snack Wagon, I'd tell the bag of Lays driving to slow down. And if the bag of Fritos in the back seat asked, "What are you doing man? It's a sweet potato chip!" I'd say, "Yeah, Fritos, I know. But it's one of the good ones."
