How to think outside the box
Buy this book to learn how to think "out of the embroidery box" and to inspire you to produce experimental and innovative textiles. Read it to understand and be able to follow the process of creativity. It will teach you to develop your own ideas and a personal style of working whatever you chose as your inspiration. Drawing to gather information is crucial to the artist embroiderer and practical ways to do this are suggested. Drawings, pages from sketch books and quality illustrations of Jean's own work enhance the text. Practical exercises include making new surfaces with and without a ground fabric, changing fabrics' structure through manipulation and working over moulds to create three dimensional pieces. An excellent inspirational book from a first class teacher.

INSPIRATIONAL BOOK FROM AN INSPIRATIONAL EMBROIDERER
I have waited a long time for Jean to write a book. It does not dissapoint. As one other review states, you read the words and hear the voice. Jean shares her ideas freely. Sketches and photographs of her work inspire, get the creative juices flowing and the fingers itching to get started on new ideas. A truely inspirational book from a truly inspirational embroiderer.

This book makes you want to do it all. RIGHT NOW
This exciting book offers possibilities you never even thought of, some suggesting techniques you may know already but used in different ways, others quite new, at least to me, and very exciting. The author begins by reminding us that we need to become aware of structure in our environments that we could use as sources for design. Then we follow clear steps in creating actual pieces from observing and drawing (don't be scared of this part) to different possibilities for construction. These include hand stitching on soluble fabrics, working over molds, constructing with stitch and constructing with stitched fabric. There are plenty of stunning pictures of finished pieces and good illustrations to showing techniques where needed. Throughout the book are excellent little boxes suggesting further work you could do.It is very clear that the author's writing is based on many years of using the techniques she writes about and wants to share her pleasure in creating in this way with the rest of us. I have no hesitation in recommending this book. I only wish there were some way that you could see the lovely things that are possible using these ideas.
