Landscape Meditations: An Artist's Guide to Exploring Themes in Landscape Painting

Landscape Meditations Landscape meditations is by far one of the best books I have ever read on being an Artist! In my, almost 70, years as an artist I have struggled with my eccentricities. For years I have been looking at a dead tree in a field off a busy hi-way. Elizabeth Mowry has given me "permission" to do what I should have done long ago, pull of the road and get some pix of it!!! In my case just a bit to late. The tree had finally fallen over so all I have is memories, but thats O.K. too, Now I have two, starting a third painting of that tree that I have pulled out of my mind. She has helped me realize that I am an "CRAZY" artist and that's just what I am supposed to be. Move out of the way world cause here I come. I am a MUCH better artist because of this book. It is beyond must have, it is essential!

I purchased this book 5 yrs. ago and was not impressed. At that time I had only been painting a year or so. I actually considered throwing it away but didn't. Yesterday I decided to go through my art books and get them organized. I thought I'd look at it again before throwing it away. I was shocked. All I can say is I must have really grown as an artist. There is much helpful information about different approaches to painting themes. I am inspired, excited and can't wait to choose a theme to start on. The paintings are lovely. Her use of color has given me much to consider. Not only is this book not going in the trash, but it is going by my easel for reference.

If one likes this style of painting, it is inspirational and provides plenty of opportunity to view the authors approach and read her ruminations about the scenes she has done. My only disappointment is that she limits the discussion and display of other artists to a small preface prior to chapter one - I would have enjoyed the examination of the works of other artists to be broader and deeper. That said, I'm not unhappy with purcase and enjoy what is presented.

It was my privilege to recently obtain a copy of Elizabeth Mowrey's latest book, "Landscape Meditations." I thorougly enjoyed her two earlier books and eagerly looked forward to receiving this one. I was not disappointed! This is not a "how to" or a "look what I did" book. As in her earlier books, she teaches us more of a philosophical even spiritual approach to artistic expression. To those of us that can't approach her talent, she lets us glimpse how a true artist thinks. I especially appreciated her sense of place in her paintings which to me is akin to the writings of Wendell Berry. Her writing and, of course, her wonderful oil pastels are good for the soul.

This is a lovely book from an experienced pastelist. The photos of her work are gorgeous and she kindly shares with the reader her process in creating art. Please note, though, that this is not a step-by-step instructional book. For the latter please see some of her other books.

A very interesting book.Author takes us through her ways of doing pastel, and some oil work, but with the thought process involved instead of methods of doing the work. A second reading is important to get the ideas she presents. The first reading makes it easy to just scan the pictures.and miss the important thoughts. I would love to take a class from her if it were available.

Very good book. Really get the idea that Ms. Mowrey enjoys being out in the landscape the way others enjoy going to church. The opportunity to commune with nature is very important spiritually. Given that, landscape painting is a testament to what we see. Not so much a painting tutorial as a means of appreciating the landscapes we paint. Would highly recommend.

Inspirational and spectacularly beautiful book on achieving effects of light and color in landscape painting. I read this cover to cover for the useful information but will continue to pore through the pages for the illustrations. Mowry's paintings are romantic and ethereal, and book is inspiring for those who wish to incorporate color, light, and mood into their paintings. A must have for your library.

Bought this on the basis of some very good reviews here. Very useuful book in my small collection of landscape books. Breaks things down into what you are seeing and how to approach things. Highly recommended

An interesting and informative book based on the authors analysis of painting methods and techniques mainly applied to similar landscapes across the year.

Ce livre est une pure merveille ! Ce n'est pas à proprement parler un livre de technique avec "comment faire" ou "comment ne pas faire" mais il donne à voir et à réfléchir et c'est sans doute la meilleure des leçons. Donc tout à fait inadapté pour le débutant qui cherche une méthode mais d'une grande contribution aux pastellistes "moyens" qui veulent faire évoluer leurs "créations"!!Pour l'instant, pour moi, le plus beau livre sur le pastel avec celui de Albert HANDELL ! Et les deux sont à des prix tres raisonnables...
