Mr Turin is a hard act to follow but ifyou can bear a few words from an old hound's snout I'd like to share my ownthoughts about this extraordinary fragrance. Created for Bulgari by AnnickMenardo in 1998 it's a \"masculine\" scent in pretty much every way (althoughI'd be just as happy smelling it on a woman if she dared to wear it!) It'sa solid, warm, wrap-around smell, which doesn't reach out too far into theair around you (thank god) and has a relatively short life span on the skinbut while it's there with you it's a curiously sensual beast. The smell ofrubber (stay with me here) for which it is much admired by aficionados hitsyou with a big opening statement, not unlike the smell a boy-racer in asouped-up Seat might make whilst skidding round a disused Essex aerodrome,burning tyres and tarmac in equal measure. If it doesn't scare you off withthat initial olfactory shock you'd do well to hang on in there for a bit toexperience the next few chapters in the story. An almost luminous after-glowof deep resinous notes suggesting amber, vanilla and funky musk evolve slowlyand almost magically into one of the most distinctive and memorable fragrancesI have ever encountered. I have absolutely no idea why - but having owned both sizes, I'm pretty sure it's true! So definitely buy small.The 40ml has all the rubbery, tarmac notes from the tester that I absolutely love - smoky tea, a vanilla note... (I can't smell anything green in it all, but Luca Turin says it's there and who am I to argue?) It definitely works well on both men and women - the wearer's body chemistry just gives it an individual inflection so it's never gender-inappropriate.And it's absurdly good value - the next best option is perhaps Bandit by Robert Piguet, which tends to come in around £60 for 50ml.
