Marlinspike is too sharp
This is a good enough knife. Hand filling, a large enough blade that can be resharpened, the marlinspike locks open and stays locked in use. The only real flaw is, as it arrives the spike is WAY too sharp. Besides being a stabbing hazard in use, the purpose of the spike is to part the lays of a line for splicing, or to get a stubborn knot untied. This spike is so sharp it severs the threads of the line, weakening it. All one has to do is file the extreme point off the spikeโs tip, and then round it over with the file or sandpaper. When youโve finished, drag the spike over your thumbnail. It shouldnโt grab. If it does, round and smooth it some more. Just a matter of minutes, really. Now the marlinspike can properly perform its job. Make sure you put an 18โ or so long line through the spike release and attach this thing to your belt. It doesnโt float.

Very good quality, feels sturdy.
This is a very nice quality riggers knife. The blade does not wiggle loosely in the front bolster, and neither does the spike in the rear bolster. The blade does need sharpening as many less expensive knives do these days, but a quick touch on a very fine stone, followed by a good stropping, took care of that. The blade does NOT have a lock, but the spike does. The spike IS VERY pointed and if not carful could damage small stuff like paracord. I did reshape the tapper to a more gradual profile. In addition, I eased the portion of the rear bolster, where the spike is pinned, to remove the sharp corners of the brass when the spike is deployed. Overall a very nice knife that should give many years of use, if taken care of properly.

My Dad was a big Schrade fan when they where made downstate NY (grew up there). Since production was moved overseas, I did not want to buy. I needed a mariner style knife that I would not care if it ended up in the Fingerlakes. So I purchased this knife. Quite surprised! Quality is pretty damn good (there are some grinding marks on the blade edge that I can remove myself)). Marlin Spike locks tight and secure. Blade has a VERY slight wobble, BUT if the blade was tighter in the bolsters, it would be difficult to open. Is it Made in NY Schrade? No, but for 20 bucks, it is a very good value. Also, on a small note, the note regarding cancer causing materials (that comes in the box) does not refer to the knife, but the preservative oil it comes coated from the factory in.

Quality
Knife arrived less than 12 hours after ordering! Seems to be a high quality rigging knife. Blade and spike are both sharp, but spike has a bad bend on the last 1/8 inch of the tip that I will have to reprofile. Spike also locks up and unlocks good. Overall a really nice knife that would be 5 stars if the spike tip wasn't bent.

Very sharp and the Marlin Spike tip will poke. Be careful
Love this knife as it fits in perfectly with the rest of on Old Timer knives. This knife is great for untangling knots. Carry it with me all of the time.

Extreme disappointment
I have 2 Old Timers. One is several years old and the other one was purchased in 1960. Both are in great shape which is why I bought this one. The older one is used and is perfect shape I'm sad to say I wasted my money. The knife that I unboxed resembled a bad middle school wood shop class. Everything is sub-par or worse: the grip is unsized and barely mounted to the knife. The fid is razor sharp snagging the knot. There's more but you get the idea. I'll admit I owned and used the Buck version of this knife and it was perfect. Unfortunately that knife is at the bottom of the Gatun locks. I was screwing around and it popped out of my hand and into the water. That was 37 years ago. I don't work anymore but I felt I had to have another one. I'm bummed.

Larger than I expected. Well built!
I always have good luck with Old Timer knives. I have more than a few. I wanted this one for the marlinspike as I do fancy knotwork with paracord. This fits the bill nicely. Big enough to fit well in my hand and pointed enough to get into the smallest knots. Great price!

Trust an old timer.
I got this as a work knife. Needed a no frills trusty workhorse. And this is it. Save the the tip of your blade by using the awesome spike for poking prying or other spikey duties. And the blade is perfect for cutting rope or boxes. Old timer is a trustworthy knife and one that should last to be handed down generations.

Reliable knife for daily chores.
Excellent knife, old fashioned design and style, just what I wanted. Blade is tight and needs pressure to close. Spike is tight and locks into place firmly. Have been using this knife on our farm for a couple of months now, works as well today as the first day it arrived. I did also buy a small knife sharpener and use it once a week to keep the blade sharp. Summary: This old fashioned Mariner's knife is a reliable daily work tool.
