"Sam Sam and Marzipan; The Cubby House" is about a 4-year-old boy and his old cat Marzipan. Sam Sam's life is filled with imaginary adventures where items such as the clock, dish, and spoon, come to life and join him and his old cat on an adventure that is only in his mind.In this book, he tells Clock, Dish, Spoon, and Marzipan about their trip on a big chocolate sea with vanilla icebergs tasting like ice cream floating by, close enough to taste. There are mountains on the side of the sea made of marshmallow and all sort of things. It’s a fun voyage with just the right foods to eat. There are other books in the series, other adventures of Sam Sam.

Pros and cons
This is the first book I've seen in the series. One thing I have to point out: Mothers do not "tell off" their kids. I think that is a bad word choice. Aside from that I enjoyed the story and the vivid, colorful illustrations. However, knowing the comment he made about his mother, Sam Sam had certainly better eat when she is finished cooking. And it goes without saying that the bag full of candy would not stay in his room. No one needs a hyper kid who is sick from eating so many treats.

A Delicious Story
(11/12/17) I would like to add a true story to my original review. I was recently on a flight with a young mother and her 1 year old son. As it was a long flight, my young seat mate became fidgety. I pulled out my Kindle and opened Sam Sam and Marzipan: The Cubby House. He was really excited to see and "touch" the pictures as we pointed to and named Sam's friends. This is a fun story about an imaginative four year old boy and his pals, Marzipan, Dish, Spoon and Tock the clock. The story is a good way to engage your child's imagination and learning of letters, colors, objects, etc. The book isn't long which is good when you're reading with toddlers. My grandson (3) has plenty of hardcover books, but he really likes to use the Kindle. We live in the U.S., so it's fun to learn Australian words like "cubby" (which autocorrect keeps changing to chubby) and "lollies". I hope you give this book a try. I think you'll like it. We did!

A sweet book!
My daughter and I enjoyed this book. It is a sweet book, literally! The story is full of imagination, adventure, and chocolate, which is my favorite! The illustrations are bright and nicely done. The story is short and would make a great bedtime story for young children, around ages 3-6. This book really brings out the kid in me thinking of all the candy. I think it could bring up great discussions with children on how it is fun to imagine eating all the yummy goodies, but it is only fun to imagine. Not to actually eat all the goodies. It could be a great way to bring up self control as kids get older when parents aren't around all the time to monitor what their kids are eating. I think all kids dream of eating lots and lots of candy, and this book could serve as a great learning opportunity to teach them that it's okay to dream about it, just not overdo it in real life.Jessica D. This book is counter productive.
I read this book to see if it would be appropriate for my child to read... and it's not!1. The formatting is horrendous. The images are tiny, as is the text and you can't just adjust it, because it's an image that won't resize on my pc. Then, I tried to download it onto my kindle and it wouldn't work, so I tried using my smartphone, and formatting was still just as bad.2. The message that the author is trying to send is also horrendous. I am not going to read a story to my child about a boy who gets to live in a land where everything is made of sugar and disrespects his parents. Just the mention of sweets sends my child into begging for them.3. The wording is not appropriate for any child. 36% into the "book", there is a sentence that reads: "Sam Sam know that his mother will tell him off, but as the captain of the ship he can do whatever he likes!" What a perfect way to send a message to a child that they can do whatever they want. And, I don't know any parent that would "Tell off their child"!

Sam Sam and Marzipan: The Cubby House
Sam Sam and Marzipan the cat go on an imaginary adventure. It sounds like fun to visit a land made up of all sweets, but this does not set a good example of a well rounded diet. Plus Sam Sam and all his friends over eat the sweets and do not want dinner when they get home. Sam Sam worries about his mother yelling at him and then she does; again this does not give positive examples of behavior young children need to learn to develop socially. It is a cute story and could be improved with the children using restraint and only tasting each treat and having an understanding mother that explains all foods are important to grow strong. In my experience children will eat sweets with no encouragement and need lessons to stress good nutrition to learn about all foods. (For forty-three years I either taught preschool, was a director of a large preschool center or director of a preschool program in the public schools, so I have a bit of experience.)

Best friend wasn't there
Yes you can eat all the sugar but the main problem i have is why did his best friend never really appear at all in the book. Cool pictures but the plate and spoon got more attention in this sugar filled world than the cat.

Fabulous Children's Story
I gave this book a 5 star review because it is full of a fabulous story which could only exist in the mind of a young child with a love for all sweets. It is accompanied by wonderful pictures which would keep any young child excited about reading the story by pictures.

My 4 year old thoroughly enjoyed it!
I loved reading this book to my little girl - she loved pretending she was also sailing on a chocolate sea! Full of imagination and colour, we look forward to reading more in this series.

An imaginative tale
My six year old daughter liked that there was candy in this and the chocolate sea. Just wish it didn’t end on a put-down (a mild one “Silly old cat”).
