There are most definitely cheaper alternatives, that do a pretty good job, but I took the plunge and bought the Trend honing guide and this is on another level. A really good honing guide and the plate to help set the angle you require is also very helpful and easy to use. I would recommend this despite the higher price tag.

The wide roller is so much better at keeping the blade level and stable compared to the narrow (13mm wide) rollers found on guides from many other manufacturers.

I bought this to go with a set of diamond honing stones I've got. This is specifically for use with diamond honing stones and not the more traditional grit ones. The guide itself holds the chisel or plane blade well but it's a bit fiddly to set up with the angle template (hence only 4 stars), but once set up it works well with the diamond stone. It rolls smoothly and, so long as you hold it square to the stone, it gives a good result.

The item while being quite sturdy is just not built very well. The claws which clamp around the chisel are not even. Every time I would tighten the claws the chisel would go askew in the claws. The right side of the chisel was seated properly while the left side was not. I tried three different chisels of different sizes and the same thing happened. Upon further inspection you can see the lower angled bits of the claws are not even. The top flat bits of the claws are even but the angled sides are not, this is why the chisel goes or of square once you tighten the nut on the honing guide. I went ahead and did some strokes on the stones and sure enough, the grind line was not square but angled. Do not waste the time or money, buy something better. I felt hopeful on this because it is from Trend and the price was a good price, however it is a major disappointment.

This is a must for any joiner / carpenter. Only used this once but its a game changer you can see the difference its made

Just what I needed

I wanted something better build quality than the $19 mass produced honing guide. So I splurged and bought this rig. And glad I did! Great machining and proper anodizing which seems to be holding up well. I've had this for over a year and it's served me well so far. I'm happy with it.

I like jigs and products that take the guess work out of angles.
