Q: Is the plastic bpa free? i see these dishes are made in the usa....i wouldn't have bought them if they were made in china.

Our dishes are made in the USA. The plastic used for manufacturing is BPA free.

We do not have any single side dishes. You could use the dish without filling the drinking water side as it is independent of the moat water side.

Q: Do you have to lift food bowl to fill water chamber?

You could do it two ways. Remove food bowl and fill with water then replace food bowl back to original position or fill the pets drinking water side until it overflows thru channel to the moat side. The moat side water does not need to be filled very high to protect the food bowl on top. Fill just enough water to create a barrier between the edge of bowl and post in the center.

Q: Can't the ants crawl up the side of the bowl? The water is under the food bowl but they could crawl up the base

The top food bowl is separated from the bottom moat bowl by a gap that prevents ants from climbing up the sides. The ants cannot climb thru the bottom because the water moat prevents them from reaching the post which supports top bowl.
