Poor instructions
Simple concise unambiguous walking directions are not rocket science, but ironically for the author of this walking routes guide, clear instructions seem beyond him. Simple language such as, “at the footpath crossroads, turn left , heading downhill … “, or “at the footpath crossroads continue straight across and begin heading uphill… “are completely beyond the wit of this man? Photographs of, and confusing mentions of landmarks which – we think - you aren’t supposed to head towards are also liberally sprinkled throughout the text. Statements such as “… you can continue following the same path to view the Wheel stones at close quarters; but then return to this point …” are clearly not in his vocabulary. All too often in several walks the directions are littered with vague directions which have a multitude of possible interpretations. Some walks – e.g. Walk 3 at Derwent water – are incomprehensible (and very frustrating). Writing clear directions is not complicated?! He also excels at the common walking guide habit of over describing the most blindingly obvious sections of walks with elaborate and pointless details (when a simple, “follow the narrow road as it winds uphill, until you pass all the buildings and reach a public footpath …” will comfortably suffice) but then precisely where there is absolute genuine ambiguity as to where you should head to next (with possible wrong options) a sparse fleeting and vague reference is offered? On a more positive note, the book itself is beautifully laid out and the authors choice of locations and routes has introduced us to lots of superb places we didn’t know existed. And some of his walks have provided adequate instructions. But for the next print run, please create a 2nd edition (with improved text), proof-read by someone who has to use these things.

Too tiny to be of any use.
This is the smallest book you will have ever held in your life - something that doesn't come across when you see the lovely big picture selling it to you. It is too small to be of any use. Yes it has (small) extracts of OS maps in but what is the point when you need a magnifying glass to read any text. I feel completely ripped off. There are plenty of books on walking in the Peak District - get one of these instead.
