It does work...
Likes: 1) It's a good weight (9 lbs) 2) It's VERY STURDY 3) It's "customizable" 4) The supplied nuts are nylon "locking" types - they WILL NOT "spontaneously loosen"! 5) The steel tube material is BEEFY - it won't "easily crumple, etc." with use 6) The "bracket welds" on the "tamp plate" are impressive - I don't expect them to break under "normal use" 7) Assembly is VERY EASY - the holes actually LINE UP! Dislikes: 1) As noted by other reviewers, the SCREWS are a bit long! 2) The "tamp plate" material "could" be a little thicker (i.e., by 50%?) This tamper does a Very Good Job of "compacting" yard waste (chopped blackberries, etc.) in the disposal bin. I put it together using ONLY ONE handle tube (the one with the rubber end) as that's all I needed for using it and, to my "surprise", the finished length is PERFECT for my use! Assembly: DO NOT USE the enclosed "nut wrench" - rather use a 1/2" socket and ratchet handle. Trust me, the ratchet will make tightening the nuts a lot easier. The enclosed HEX WRENCH is more than adequate for "holding" the bolts while you tighten the nuts. Yes, you can "over-tighten" the nuts a little - this will help prevent "rattling" by "compressing" the steel against itself. Bolt length: I appreciate the "generous" bolt length, however once assembled/tightened, there is "quite a bit" of protruding threads (between 3/8" and 1/2"). However, this can be alleviated by using a hacksaw or "Dremel" tool with a cutting disc to lop off the extra threads. Just remember to FILE DOWN the sharp edges afterward (especially the HANDLE bolts)! :) Otherwise, this is a Very Good "budget" tool for the "casual, etc." gardener.

Very solid
This steel tamper is very solid and well made. The 48-inch handle makes it easy to use without bending over, and the rubber grip is comfortable and secure. Itโs heavy-duty and works exactly as expected, making tamping much easier and less tiring. Great quality tool and definitely worth it.

Gets the job done, nice price point but less on quality
Clever packaging and good overall product.. saved me 20$ vs hardware store. Other reviews are correct.. the extra long bolts stick out quite a bit and are annoying. Not a deal breaker for me since Iโll use sparingly for minor yard projects but wouldnโt buy otherwise. Bolted components for the shaft vs a store bought singular shaft make it so that it feels a bit loose and upon impact you can feel it clink/shift in your grip a bit. The 10x10โ size is nice and larger than others I saw at Home Depot 8x8

Great for tamping soil down
Used to tamp down slice they make in the ground when they bury coax cable. Just heavy enough.,,,

Sturdy tool for backyard projects
I bought this steel tamper to help level some dirt and gravel for a small patio I was building, and honestly, it's been one of those "why didn't I get this sooner?" tools. It's simple, super solid, and kind of satisfying to use. The handle is just the right length so you can get some good force without killing your back, and the plate is heavy enough to do the job but not so heavy you can't lift it after ten minutes. I used it for a couple of afternoons in rocky soil, and it doesn't seem any worse for wear. Bonus: it's weirdly fun to stomp down dirt with this thing. If you need packed earth, this tamper gets it done.

weight not as advertised
I had asked prior to purchasing to confirm the weight and was told the 10x10 weighted 14 lbs because I wanted a heaver model. the actual weight with the handle is closer to 11.5 lbs
