My Poet

Mary Oliver, one of the most prolific and beloved, award-winning poets of modern America, is my very favorite poet, and I have many of her collections. This adorable book has been the doorway to introducing poetry and poets to my almost 6-year-old granddaughter. I’m so glad I ordered it. I think you and the special children in your life will be delighted by it!

Love everything about this lovely book. Highly recommend it for ypung children and the young at heart.

Many people probably consider Mary Oliver "their" poet, but for this picture book author, it is true. Patricia MacLachlan lived in the same town as Mary Oliver, and they were friendly acquaintances. This book celebrates poetry and poets through a peek into Mary's daily life and poems from the point of view of a girl named Lucy. Lucy wants to be a poet, too, and engages Her Poet whenever she sees her. Her Poet responds with encouragement and questions, leading Lucy to more wondering about how Her Poet thinks, as they spend a day in nature together.Naturally, the text is poetic. "Does the sand whisper to her?" "Do the roses sing words?" The accompanying illustrations by Jen Hill show the scenes with warmth. Recommended especially for people of all ages who are "still looking for the words."
