SHAZAM!
This is about a guy who was inducted into the no-doubt long list of people who said "SHAZAM!" and became a superhero. He did this 5000 years ago (well, 4600 or so years ago, actually, since the time was 2500 BC and now is 2100+AD, but that's kinda picky) and was promptly imprisoned by the Wizards because he turned out to be more of a supervillain than a hero. So, when he is released by a desperate descendent and citizen of the ancient land he is credited with saving, Amanda Waller sends Hawkman and his team in to re-imprison him. This proves to be problematic, as his powers are a lot greater than Waller's team. Also, he still isn't a hero, and a large part of the film involves ameliorating that position into something a bit more heroic. The film, given what it is, is well done with a coherent plot and lots of action. Enjoy!

Great story and character casting. But- Logic gaps man.
Logic gaps, man. It's like your aren't even trying. You can't be smashing up giant, 5000 year old relics like irresponsible fighting in dense populated areas for extra stakes sake isn't exploding debris gluttony gore enough. Waaaaaay too far- logic gap. Can you imagine getting killed by mr. good guy boss man sticking an immature idiot with superpowers in the field. Thanks a lot! Who's the "lose canon"???I'm pretty sure Hawkman's "extrajudicial" kill count is higher than Adam's- logic gap.Lollypop guild pants- come on man. Throwing scaffolding posts at a nigh on invulnerable guy that can fly- what is that accomplishing?- slow motion color smear with a pretty face in the middle? By this point all I see is a movie. Let me just walk through this wall without knowing what's on the other side . Maybe more kids- but it's epic! Well, it could have been except for the very obvious LOGIC GAP. Let's just smash this giant throne made of solid rock with the woman and child you've been saving all movie long standing right next to it- you know by now.It was great story without a lot of homogenized, GenZ cliche. Too bad I just kept getting pulled out of it. Still, Rocky Johnson is Black Adam, can't get more characterization perfection. Loved the twists. They actually made sense and advanced a great story.Just a thought- Would setting a super battle in the middle of nowhere allowing the audience to focus on the individual combatants, their abilities and results of their efforts be better than yet another smashing building debris city gorefest staple be more appreciated by now. Am I giving the audience to much credit?

Really 3.5, and I love The Rock - Dialogue is weak
It was a little too juvenile in places. They matched the maturity to Shazam! and that was not a good choice for such a violent character from the comics. There's a lot of killing, some of it graphic, but the dialogue was what needed one level up in maturity. The writers were not matching the dialogue to the level needed in the scenes.I love The Rock and watch most of his movies. He was definitely the action anti-hero here, but he did not bring enough gravitas to the character. I feel like they had to have left some scenes on the cutting room floor. There was also no explanation for how Black Adam understands modern language. Even a side away line with "Wisdom of Zehuti means I understand all tongues" would've been enough. The character adapted to the modern world very quickly and that was not a good thing for me. I actually liked the choice of making Amon Adriana's son instead of brother. It brought a different dynamic to Black Adam's love interest.I loved the JSA casting choices. However, making Hawkman the moral high ground - Batman level Stan of Not Killing Enemies - was odd even if the actor had great conviction carrying it. Hawkman carries a mace. Not a pool noodle. I also did not like how they made the JSA headquarters and transport ultra modern. JSA characters are old school, legacy, and it should have been more of an X-Mansion vibe. I get updating things, but JSA are the old school team in DC comics, so they should've had some nods to their past history further than Kent Nelson commenting on how long he's been alive. I think they could've used at least 5 more minutes per JSA character to expand on them to make their contributions more than superficial. It was also kind of odd they didn't mention past teammates considering their roster is pretty expansive. An out of focus old team photo in the background would've been great to see.I liked Adriana's casting choice. Amon's actor had good energy. Amon is a 180 from how he was introduced in the 52 storyline in the comics. I get why they went this route, it would have been too complex to show his original origin in a film. I did like the character's hope and optimism they went with. I actually do not think it would've been too much to have Black Adam share his powers with Adriana in this film. That would've been a great tie off.Fight scenes are fantastic. Excellent special effects. Excellent creative display of super powers. I loved the fighting scenes. The plot was kind of sprawling, but I could see where it was going. I think a time jump would've actually worked better in this film rather than jumping from location to location, crisis to crisis.Lastly, I wish they had chosen to use Arabic or another language to convey it was actually a different country at least at the start of the film with scenes between Khandaqi characters. What's the point in making your films more global if you don't actually immerse characters in that locality? I'm getting annoyed by Hollywood continuing to use primarily English in multinational films. It's a disservice to everyone. So I loved the action, most of the plot and the casting. The writing and dialogue is what brought this down for me. I will certainly buy and watch a sequel but this was a bit of a letdown. I was expecting it from reviews but I had been looking forward to this film since it was announced. The recent DC releases have been disappointing, hopefully things will get turned around with the WB/HBO getting their wheelhouse in order.

Love it
The anti hero. He tells you who he is and you should believe him.Why can’t a Black Man get a even break?

Much better than poster and previews led me to believe
As origin stories go, this was a bit labored but the character of Black Adam is heroic without being the annoyingly squeaky clean, even-tempered Superman type. Black Adam has super-powers, an Old Testiment-y sense of justice so bad things happen to baddies without due process, and a snarky attitude I enjoyed. Johnson suits this super-not-a-hero-but-still-righteous guy to a tee.All these type of movies are chockablock with CGI, so nothing out of the ordinary.I really think the poster image of a glowering DJ/BA lounging arrogantly on a big stone throne did not serve to characterize the actual movie's substance at all.I look forward to more.
