Speak and write perfect English! BBI teaches you how to combine words with words to form phrases (so you can say “ mortgaged to the hilt ; I want something badly ”). BBI also teaches you how to combine words into structures to form clauses and sentences (so you can say “I want you to go = What I want is for you to go ”). So BBI helps you with both vocabulary and grammar. BBI shows you important vocabulary and grammatical differences between American and British English. BBI gives you plenty of examples that can serve as models for your own use of English. Some of these examples are authentic quotations from works of American and British literature. This Third Edition of the BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English is an expanded and updated version of the First Edition (1986) and its Revised Edition (1997), both of which were favorably received. In this third edition, the contents of the BBI have been increased by over 20%. In the selection and presentation of new material, many sources have been used, including: Internet searches; The British National Corpus; Reading and listening to English-language material; For Grammatical Patterns: A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language (Randolph Quirck et al.); For Collocations: Lists of Lexical Functions (compiled by Igor Mel’cuk et al.). The BBI has been “highly recommended” by the English-Speaking Union. Using the BBI: A workbook with exercises is now available online at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1075/z.bbi.workbook Review: Clear, concise and to the point - This excellent dictionary fills a gap which even the best ordinary dictionaries hardly even try to fill: what prepositions to use with nouns and verbs; and when two or more can be used, what are the differences in meaning. Strongly recommended. Review: Nice to have - Although one can look almost anything up online these days, it is practical to have a list of suitable collocations to hand. I find that I often end up using a word I did not initially think of myself, after having read it here whilst wanting to confirm another collocation.

good buy
Useful for teachers and translators. The only complaint - could be more comprehensive, but still the best available in the market in my opinion.

Excellent reference book on HOW to use words
This is a wonderful tool for the advanced learner of English as a foreign language, and probably occasionally for the native speakers too. A perfect complement to dictionaries (the user must already know the meaning of the words they want to look up in BBI dictionary), it provides information on HOW TO USE the words correctly (right preposition, sentence structure, collocations, etc). Many examples are included in the entries for extra clarity. Abbreviations indicate the language register (formal, colloquial, etc)or that a word is used differently in British English (=BE) and American English (AE). Here are three examples : "rendition" n. 1. to give a ~ 2. a letter-perfect (AE), word-perfect (BE)~ "norm" n. 1. ["standard"] 1. to establish, set a ~ 2. to deviate from the ~ ["average"] 3. above; below the ~ "cruel" adj. 1. ~ to, towards (~ to animals) 2. . ~ to + inf. (it was cruel of him to say that) An excellent reference book.

Concise usage dictionary by linguists with a flair for language
I have treasured the BBI dictionary of American and British English since the first edition (1986). There is a sense of care throughout, as though the authors are concerned, first, that the reader become able to use the word in context as a native English speaker would. Words do not stand alone. The BBI dictionary is designed to help with collocations, those additional words that are needed to express certain senses. For some headwords, a brief phrase is given defining the sense of the headword, such as "soil", "ground" for land. Within each headword, each numbered entry presents (a defining phrase if needed and) a typical use consisting of the headword and a few words around it. When the typical use needs explanation, a more extended example is given. BE or AE is indicated when the use occurs only in British English or American English, or when a different use needs to be stated. I bought the third edition (2009) for use in editing poetry and non-fiction, where words gain power when they are properly combined. The third edition improves upon the first. The numbered entries have been more carefully divided. The typical uses have been slightly expanded, for example to show a typical object or infinitive that wasn't mentioned before. The third edition smiles at the reader more broadly and caringly than the first, as though in the 23 years since the first, it has grown wiser about the world, and about helping people write English.
