and sweet potato. Overall
Just back from the farmer's market, I had ample opportunity to try this gizmo on a variety of items—zucchini, eggplant, cucumber, and sweet potato.Overall, I have to say the zucchini worked best for me. (The eggplant kept clogging the blades and the same with the cucumber. Sweet potato was okay but not as good as the zucchini, and definitely took more elbow grease.)I find it's definitely easier if you NOT do as pictured in the demo photo (holding the contraption over the bowl). Instead, hold it down against a firm surface, gripping carefully around the metal "handles." If you're not well-coordinated, you might not want to try this, because these blades are sharp. As a test, I didn't tell my husband what type of "spaghetti" I was preparing. I just said it was a little different. :-)First I sauteed some shallots and added some diced tomatoes, and cooked that down. Then I added the spirals of zucchini and closed the lid on a low heat. (Before adding the spirals, I put in the end bits of the zucchini that would not go through the spiral slicer and gave them a minute or two to soften.) If you cook too long or at too high a heat, you're going to have mushy stuff. I aimed for "al dente."My husband pronounced the results "delicious" and "not bad for faux spaghetti."I think this would be a great way to add vegetables to a finicky child's diet, providing that the spirals are not overcooked and are in a sauce that is tasty. A combination of yellow and green squash looks quite festive!Cleaning was not extremely easy. I found that if I set the gizmo in the dishwater to soak for a while, and then smacked it lightly against the sink, that worked better than the brush. But the brush is still necessary for the fine-tuning.

This one did a good job on zucchini and cucumbers
I've used a few spiralers recently, so I tend to look for a few things, to decide if it'll work for me or not. This one did a good job on zucchini and cucumbers. Carrots are a bit harder, but I liked that it had different blades to do different things. For two people, this works. Your hands get tired, but for a big meal, this would not be your tool, unless you need a garnish or topping. I plan to slice potatoes and try this to make hash browns, and if I do I'll update my review, but for the standard veggies, it worked well for me. No safety issues. It needs cleaned out after a few minutes though, so that is a bit time consuming, but for the amount I do for my household, it didn't bother me. It cleaned easily with a little brush, and just sink and soap. No dishwasher needed.*I was given this product to test and provide honest feedback

Handy-dandy little device.
There are two ends one for thicker slices and one for thinner slices. The blades are down inside of a cone-shaped area so there is no need to worry about slicing your fingers like you might on a traditional mandolin which is much larger and actually more difficult to use. Ironically, the box says something about "no annoying attachments", but there is a guard you can use to push the vegetables through and a separate brush which will help with clean up. It would be nice if the guard did somehow attach to the slicer so you could keep them together in the drawer. But, who am I to quibble?Coincidentally, I was walking through a big box store yesterday and saw almost the exact same device for well over the twice the price. So, if you're going to get one of these, get it here.

I wouldn't recommend this product. It's faults far outweigh its usefulness.
I received this item free for review but despite that kindness I'm absolutely candid below. When I saw this I was overjoyed with the idea of being able to make sweet potato "pasta" (its a good way to reduce your gluten intake).I was really disappointed with this. My sweet potato keep getting stuck in the hole in the center and I'd have to break it off and start all over. My spirals ended up being 1.5 inches long. The "pasta" that I was able to make was 1/2 of the vegetable. Due to waste, I wouldn't recommend this product for harder veggies. I tried a carrot as well with the same bad outcome.Out of the three veggies I tried, the cucumber worked the best. It made a beautiful salad. It went through the grates easy and looked nice. But having this product just for one vegetable doesn't really make sense.Because of the cone shape on each side the veg will naturally be sharpened at each end and eventually getting stuck in the center holes. The little brush that was included was useful but I still had to use a toothpick to push the harder veggies out of the grates.I wouldn't recommend this product. It's faults far outweigh its usefulness.

Very sharp blades, durable construction, a nice product
Note: Inreceived this product free for testing and review. This is a spiral slicer that jullienes a variety of vegetables. You can use it to make short segments, or long noodle style segments. The product is capable of slicing "noodle" segments well over a foot long. There will be a segment of the vegetable left over that you cannot slice, but this will be a small piece. The blades are very sharp, and caution should be taken around children. Blades are easy to clean, a small wire brush was included to safely clean debris from the blades. It's dishwasher safe, so after the wire brush, I just toss it in the dishwasher to finish the job. The unit also comes with a cap to help push the food through as you work. The cap does not attach to the unit, so it helps to store it in an upright position with the cap sitting on top.I do wish the cap attached to the unit to make storage easier without the risk of losing the cap.Overall, a decent product that does what it says it does. Blades are sharp and effective. Enjoy!

Dandy and Handy!
This little slicer does exactly what it is supposed to do: it spiral slices veggies and does so neatly and efficiently. The lack of directions caused me to drop one star off the review, but after messing around with it for a while, we figured it out. It cleans up easily. I am not sure if it is dishwasher proof, but why take the chance? A careful, brisk scrub gets it back like new. The blades are sharp, so exercise care in handling and storing. For a nice plate of sliced veggies, this is a good buy.
