"Sachiko, we beg of you!"
Where to begin with this? Having played the game on the PS Vita and seen the anime adaptation I could go into a whole essay of comparisons and tell you which one is better or which one is worth starting with. Of course each adaptation is a different way to experience the story. As a video game you are fighting for survival and trying to keep your classmates alive. Every choice you are faced with leads to a different conclusion. Usually in the form of a character dying in some gruesome brutal fashion. The in-depth descriptions of the dialogue made the game a very personal experience for the player. Ultimately the game's true ending is a hopeful one. However, the anime adaptation, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls was more or less a rushed retelling of the game's story with all the bad endings which left something of a bad taste in my mouth after having so much fun with the video game. However, I have only read this first volume of the manga adaptation and it is proving to hold true to the plot of the game and not the anime thankfully. I would strongly recommend that anyone wanting to give the Corpse Party franchise a try, this is not a bad place to start. (Personally I say play the game in order to fully appreciate the horror elements and character developments). This manga has nice character designs that do not vary too much from the game. The cutesy, upbeat quality of the main character designs offer a good contrast to their grizzly bloody, supernatural encounters. Subtle dialogue changes are not a bother to me personally. If anything it improved it a little. One scene in particular in chapter one. Satoshi is scared by a sudden black out and grabs onto the person closest to him. In the game, he "accidentally" grabs Naomi's chest and of course she cries "pervert!" (a lame and boring cliche to reveal romantic interest in anime if I'm honest). But here they simply hold each other and have a moment of blushing before Seiko steps in to tease them. Which to me was a subtle improvement. I find "ecchi humor/moments" extremely annoying and unrealistic as it distracts from the the much more interesting plot and character developments. The scene flows at a more natural pace this way without removing any of the humor. The cover is a little misleading as it suggests that there will be sexualised fanservice throughout the plot. But so far any fanservicey moments from the game have been toned down for the plot's benefit. But that is not to say they have been removed completely. We shall see what is to come in the following volumes.
