Very fun experience if you know what to expect
I see a lot of reviews of people claiming this is a board game and therefore not really a game. What you need to know is that this is narrative focused role playing game. You don't roll dice. You don't have stacks and stacks of cards and components. It's an RPG and you are only able to appreciate the game when you understand this. You don't win and you don't lose. You read and make choices. The choices you make are what make this game special. It's kind of like Dungeons and Dragons without having to have a Dungeon Master and having to understand heaps of rules because if you are able to read, are able to write, and want to role play you can play this game. It's very very simple. I really don't think you will enjoy this if you don't enjoy role playing. Plain and simple.

Excellent game!
What an inventive game engine. A wonderful blend of choose your own adventure book and a traditional role playing game. Great story for experienced gamers and perfect for those new to role playing games as the rules are very simple and easy but not “lacking”. A concern I had was replay ability and to a degree I see where it could be an issue as you could remember what you read in a previous play through. To avoid this be sure to play a character with different skills (which are what gives you choice options) and personality as your supposed to “think” like the character. This will lead you down paths you previously did not travel. Just be sure to download the game sheets from the company’s web site or copy them off the back of the books, don’t mark up your books.

A really fun experience - not so much a game
Legacy of Dragonholt is more or less an attempt to combine an Dungeons-and-Dragons style role-playing game with a tabletop game, and take away the need for one player to be the Dungeonmaster. The result is a cooperative (or solo) experience that is very much an immersive story. Pros: 1. Build your own character - you decide your character's race (human, elf, gnome, orc, catfolk, etc) and then create the character from the ground up. You write the character's description, background, interests, motivations, personality traits - whatever you want to include. And, you can have your character make choices that are "in character" for the material you wrote. You also choose your character's skills and abilities, which will play an important role in the game. 2. Immersive world - the game world has a cohesive feel, and there's a lot of backstory available to be discovered along the journey. The writers did an excellent job of world-building. 3. well thought-out cooperative mode. Each player has an activation token. When you make a decision for the group, you flip your token to its deactivated side. You can't make another decision until everyone else in the party has flipped their tokens. When the final player token is flipped, all are reactivated. This helps keep one "alpha" gamer from making all the decisions. It also makes each decision important, because only the skills of the character making the decision may be used. So, if only one of your characters has the "Persuasion" skill and that character has already made a decision, you can't use Persuasion while making the next decision. 4. Lots of (at least seemingly) meaningful decisions - your party will make hundreds of decisions over the course of the entire campaign. And the campaign appears to be fairly lengthy. We have played roughly 4 hours or so and I would guess we have 20-30 hours to go (minimum) to finish the campaign. (Disclaimer: I'm playing with my kids, so we're not speed-reading. your mileage may vary). Cons: 1. Limited replayability - you MIGHT be able to go through the campaign twice if you enjoy seeing how making different decisions would affect the story, but that's about it. It's basically a play-it-once-and-sell-it game. 2. More activity than game - where the game differs from a true RPG - your characters don't have stats, and you don't roll dice in combat or while making decisions. There's no "critical fail" when trying to con the blacksmith out of a sword, to make a random example. You make a decision, flip to the appropriate paragraph, and see what happens. That's not to say the decisions aren't meaningful. Just that making decisions is the extent of the game. So, if you're a fan of interactive stories, and if you really enjoy getting together with friends to laugh and have an adventure, chances are you'll love this game. It's already one of my youngest son's all-time favorite games, and we haven't finished the campaign yet. If you're the type to get frustrated by lack of rolling dice and leaping into battle, you might be disappointed. Overall, we're really enjoying it. I do wish there was more openness, so you could keep playing once you finished the campaign. But as a consolation, the quality of the components is such that you shouldn't have any problem selling or trading it once you finish, so long as you make copies of the tracking sheets instead of writing in the books.

a must for all all rpg fans.
the game was very easy to learn and play. character creation was pretty simple but took quite bit of thought. for people that love role playing and story telling its a perfect game. it's not a combat based game but i thought that was pretty cool, it's not very easy to find games like this one! five stars to Nikki Valens, great job! i am half way thru and am totally loving it!

Great story based game
We (myself, wife, and teenage daughter) LOVED this game. It had an engaging story and characters, and actions had real consequences to the story. The game mechanics are simple enough to learn, and most of the game is played like a choose your own adventure book, with limited RPG elements (i.e., you get to decide what your character is good at, and it actually affects what happens in the game). My daughter and I play fairly complicated board games (e.g., Gloomhaven), but my wife has never been able to stay engaged with anything that complicated. But she LOVED this game. I wish there were more like it. FWIW, we got the best possible ending (we think) the first time, but we definitely missed a lot of story arcs (because there are time elements, and we just didn't get the timing + location right to unlock some of the side stories). If we hadn't got the best ending, we definitely would play it again till we did.

A fun "Choose your own adventure" for beginners to table top gaming. With a terrible final act.
My wife and I purchased this as our first tabletop game together. We had a ton of fun playing it... until we got to the final act. The final act was atrocious. It gave the impression that it had amazing depth, only to find out it was incredibly shallow. In fact, it was so poorly executed that it caused my wife and I to make choices we otherwise wouldn't have made based on how the other quests had functioned in the past. As a result we got an undesirable ending! For this reason, this otherwise fun-filled gaming experience gets a 3 out of 5 stars.

Solo RPG Book(s)
Very easy too play text adventure that has no other variable like dice. Highly recommended as a Solo game. It could be played with more ppl and sharing the experience would be great, but it would make it awkward as the story is written about a single character. (Non-spoiler Example: say you decide to climb a tree because you have the required skills to do so, the whole party manages to climb the tree regardless of their skills. Now let's say after deciding to climb the tree, another prompt/check is needed for either some unforseen complication or simply a continuation of the same skill (climbing the tree), but because you already made a decision (the climbing of said tree), you cannot make another decision until all the other players have cycled through an action. Therefore one of the "not skilled at climbing trees" players is making a choice and or check. One more example: there are several prompts to take damage as a whole party from the actions of a single character, to whom will recieve a different unique amount of damage from their action. Its 1 of a few odd things the game does to tie all these players back to a single characters story. Play it solo, read it to someone as the gamemaster. Fantastic story for one!

Fun Choose Your Own Adventure Book.
If as a kid you enjoyed choose your own adventure books and would like to see what one of those would be like if expanded out and overproduced, this is for you! I am finding it very enjoyable and definitely worth a look if it captures your interest. The writing is good by my estimation, though I am no literary critic so your mileage there may vary. It's not so much a "game" though and I definitely suggest reading it solo as a more of a "book" experience.

Excellent, Challenging Game
This game is fantastic! It is very challenging and takes a bit to learn but after 5 or 6 practice games we got the gist of how to play. It's always the way with these types of challenging boardgames. They are next-level when it comes to being stimulating. Thoroughly recommend the game.
