Jazz Theory

I have used a number of sources in my independent attempts to learn to play jazz and this book is, by far, the best of them all. The author offers clear and thorough discussions that are supported by musical examples in the text and in the online material. I like the way the book is divided into ten "Basic" chapters, followed by nine "Intermediate" chapters and it concludes with eight "Advanced" chapters. As another reviewer mentioned, the book is "comprehensive" in that it begins at a very fundamental level and builds along a clear pathway to a spectrum of advanced topics.The online material includes "Play Along Sessions"; over 1,000 (audio and written) exercises for ear training, rhythm, analysis, etc.; recordings of all 390 musical examples from the book, links to guides (making transcriptions, etc.) and it all functions very well.As a text for a course, I think that this book would be excellent in every way. The content is clearly accessible and the layout is appealing."Jazz Theory..." certainly has my highest recommendation.

This books covers from basics to very advanced jazz theory. It address clearly everything from the modes to very detailed analysis of classics like Billie’s Bounce, Confirmation and Moose the Mooche. There are special sections on Pentatonics, Hexatonics, Octatgonics. There is also focus on performers like Coltrane and Tristano. I believe this was part of Prof. Terefenko’s classes. There are not many books that are as completed and thoroughly researched. Worth the $$!

I'm trying to become more knowledgeable in music theory. I ordered this book to help me understand chords and scales. This book has everything from basic to advanced. The website is even more helpful. I highly recommend this book.

Fantastic, comprehensive study of jazz harmony. Well worth it!

This is an amazingly comprehensive study of the workings of jazz theory. Get the workbook. It has loads of material that are not in the book. The workbook appendices alone have tons of material that are better that most of my other jazz keyboard exercise books. I could spend years going through the material in these books.

Great book, but the associated online companion review has not been honored. Without that, the book is no use to me so I am considering returning it.

The problem with most music books like this one is the sample does not include any musical samples so I have no idea if this book will work for me on my device. I need to know if I am able to zoom on the musical notation on my music stand. Too bad that I did not find any examples in the sample. Looks like a great book and I would buy it right now if this notation question was clear to me in the sample. Rating is based on a guess. I will say 3 though I suspect could be higher.
