Lebanese Cinema: Imagining the Civil War and Beyond (World Cinema)

A very well done dissertation (it actually seemed more than a University thesis than a book to me) on the movies made during and after the civil war on themes inspired by these "events".Lebanese cinema is more represented as a psychoanalytic essay for its people to deal with the traumas caused by this 15 year war; as the only effort in this country for them to deal with the ghosts of their past; analysing at the same time the main themes of such a cinema flow such as exile, masculinity and even more women's representation either as mothers, fighters or victims during these years.Recommended not only to the ones interested in contemporary Lebanese history and cinema but as well to everyone interested in the research on world and more specifically middle-eastern ones.

I purchased this for $29 with $3.99 shipping in 2012. It came in 5 days.This book served its purpose. I needed a source for a Lebanese film class final paper at Oakland University and I was struggling to find any information online about the Middle East that wasn't bias or obviously affiliated with a political party. That said, it did the job but it was a one time read and I haven't picked it up or even thought about it since.

Ad oggi il cinema libanese sta lentamente emergendo e vede le sue punte di diamante in Ziad Doueiri e Nadine Labaki (quest'ultima citata solo una volta in tutto il volume, necessiterebbe di un più ampio approfondimento ma al momento non esistono manuali o materiale a riguardo) ma già dagli anni novanta il cinema libanese ha iniziato a mostrasi al mondo ed è diventato punto di riferimento per l'intera industria cinematografica araba soppiantato i blockbusters egiziani sempre soggetti a cospicua censura e prodotti che hanno più del pesante carrozzone che di un film godibile e sofisticato. In italiano sul cinema arabo c'è veramente poco e, tolti i testi di Nicosia, se si vuole affrontare la tematica ci si deve rivolgere a testi in inglese, ancor più quando ci si indirizza verso "un'industria" (e leggendo il libro capirete perché non si può chiamare in questo modo) che solo nell'ultimo ventennio ha preso piede anche a livello internazionale.Il volume è ottimo e dopo una sezione dedicata alla storia del cinema libanese si sofferma sulle tematiche comuni ai film e lancia ottimi spunti sulla mia banale identità nazionale libanese.
