A very well crafted instruction book. As an accomplished guitarist / songwriter, I've been playing all my life, however, I really wanted to delve into the world of jazz guitar, so after a while of searching online and reading many, many reviews, I finally came upon this 3-books-in-1-volume and have to say it is excellent. It has a clear to follow method that starts from basics and progresses to a satisfactory level...I have to recommend this book. It is perfect for tentative searchers, who not wishing to be frightened seek some jazz guitar enlightenment - its probably the best book you will find in this category and well worth the money and time spent studying it....

Brilliant for scales work
This is absolutely fab for developing your knowledge and practice of scales (major/Dorian/Mixilydian/natural minor especially - as other than pentatonics - these are all I'll ever use). Arpeggios are great too - helped me along good style. I'm no Jazz player, and that's not my interest (Blues/Rock and Pop/folk) but the techniques in this book are great for any style. Chords? Far too many - but that's Jazz for you. I only use the section Bs and the beginning and intermediate books. Advanced? maybe in another lifetime....

Comprehensive, well written and clearly organised
A perfect, fully contained introduction into Jazz concepts, chordal harmony and improvisation. Plenty of complex ideas distilled into clear, concise (and fun) lessons and exercises with different learning tracks depending on your objectives and interests. It is clear that a lot of time and effort has gone into not just the content, but also the structure and flow of this compendium. Something here for everyone looking to up-skill their jazz chops and general musical theory knowledge. Highly recommend.

This does not come with a CD - as advertised but it does come with a web link
This does not come with a CD as advertised - I can say that because I had to order it again and the second had no CD in it either. But it does have a link to a website which proves the needed audio material. I have not started the course yet but at first glance it certainly seems to be very slick and comprehensive.

Great book!
Great book! I’m really impressed with it. I'd put it up there with Ted Greene's Chord Chemistry which is like a bible for any beginner, starting to play the guitar who knows a few chords and wants to take their playing to the next level. Mind-boggling but I really enjoyed reading and I like how the book is divided into sectionsAdam

Excellent Book - Not for beginners
This book is brilliant if you have already mastered basic playing techniques you should also be competent with barre chords before beginning. The first chapter of the book makes sure you're up to speed with a good chunk of this stuff if you're not.The book covers all types of chords, scales and improvisation and moves in a logical order. The etudes are great for practicing what you've learnt at each stage and help you to gauge when you're ready to move on.I was really pleased with this book. I always like to look at new angles at playing guitar and this one covers a hell of a lot of material in it's 300 pages.

Another lengthy technical book
I was convinced by the reviews to go for this. I have a reasonable ability on guitar, albeit not in jazz styles. This is a step by step highly theoretical book which has lots of exercises I really won't ever try. It isn't that great as a reference text, i.e. no page with jazz chord fingerings all in one section. If you have a highly analytical and dedicated approach to learning this might be a good option. Like many others, I find if its too technical and theoretical, I lose interest and I doubt I will use this book. Let's face it, the reason many people go for guitar is to get playing right away and just pick things up as you go along. You would need a lot of dedication to use this book properly and it really wasn't what I was after. One of the problems of buying online, sight unseen I suppose. I wanted something that would quickly get me on the road to being a competent jazz rhythm guitarist and I should be able to do that; this isn't the book for me although it might be the right one for you!

Amazingly thorough book
I new this book would be above my level when I ordered it, but I want to build a playing knowledge with as much resource as possible, this book doesn't disappoint, it is full of all manor of chords, scale patterns and information all explained in a straight forward way, I would imagine I will never outgrow this book as it is so comprehensive, I look forward to improving my playing, music knowledge and trying to get to the end of the book if I can :DOne of, if not the best guitar technique/study books I have bought, no matter what level your at there is something for everyone who wants to progress and is willing to put the time in!

I choose it over Mickey Baker for its detail and completeness
First of all a correction: the book doesn't come with a CD any longer; the audio is online. No big deal either way, just don't expect a CD.Well, I'm learning jazz guitar after years of playing other styles (folk and classical). It was between this book and Mickey Baker, so I bought both. I find the style and approach of this one to be more suited to my style.Whereas Baker's first book is brief and a bit sketchy (although undoubtedly excellent), this book starts you off with enough theory to give you a solid foundation. You're not just thrown into "learn these chord shapes" without much background information. Scales come up first here, and although playing scales may not be the height of excitement, I know I need to get the basics down (and it's so unlike playing scales for the classical genre!)The book moves ahead at a deliberate pace. Lessons are divided into parts relevant to comping and soloing/improvising. There are three parts, going through to a very advanced level. It will take me years to get there, but I see how it's at least possible.I prefer the "talky" approach and the wealth of detail, compared to the spareness of Mickey Baker. Your own preferences may differ, but I find this to be the best book out there for beginning to learn jazz and progressing to higher levels. One caveat: if you've never played guitar before, don't start here. You have to know the basics first. Get a method like Mel Bay or whatever you like and work through the first two or three grades before getting into jazz.
