Xl is Big! Fits over my carhart jacket with layers under it with no problem. Maybe could have got large and been okay. There are big pockets on the outside but just has a small piece of velcro to keep it closed, so anything small enough will fall out. Didn't buy it for pocket space though so it is just fine.
