MDNA MADONNA MDNA is the twelfth studio album by American singer Madonna, released on March 23, 2012, by Interscope Records. The album was conceived while the singer was busy throughout 2011 with filming her directorial venture, W.E. Madonna started the recording in July 2011 and collaborated with a variety of producers such as Alle Benassi, Benny Benassi, Demolition Crew, Free School, Michael Malih, Indiigo, William Orbit, and Martin Solveig, the last two serving as primary producers of the record. The album features guest features by female rappers M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj. Music critics were ambivalent towards the album. MDNA topped the record charts in most musical markets. Madonna set a new record for the most number-one albums by a solo artist in Australia and the United Kingdom. MDNA was the twelfth best-selling album of 2012 globally, and went on to sell two million copies.

Madonna's A Winner And I Like It That Way
Madonna had faced many criticism when she first burst onto the scene in the early 1980s: she can't sing, she uses sex and controversy to sell music, she is a flash in the pan. Well apparently this flash turned out to be a supernova whose effect is still being felt today, especially in the crop of female stars that it spawned, from Lady Gaga to Britney Spears to Rihanna. So now the criticism is that she is too old and ought to retire. Madonna is now in her early 50s and 60 is looming in less than 10 years and I do not fault her in trying to do as much dance music while she still could; kind of like Roger Moore squeezing in another Bond movie until the outcry of his advanced age from the movie going public couldn't be ignored by the producers anymore.Which leads us to MDNA, her first album not associated with Warner Brothers and the first album post-divorce. Madonna have always used her personal life as inspiration for her work, but often they are subtle and implied, not like here, where she is practically hitting the listener on the head with a two-by-four. Here is my take on each song after repeated listen...which is warranted as the woman no longer include lyrics on the CD booklets since Music in 2000.1. Girl Gone Wild (8.85)The opening track and second single, at first glance it is silly but it turned out to be one of the more danceable and catchy tracks. Not as good as her previous works but still fun and irreverent.2. Gang Bang (8.96)One of the most raved about tracks amongs fans and critics because it is a dark violent song with Madonna singing/talking through it with lyrics about bang bang shot my lover in the head. A novel concept and unusual, I'd admit. But it got repetitious in the end and for me, it turn out to be one of the track I listened to the least. On some level, it sounds like one of those phoney leaked Madonna songs fans made up by using Madonna samples and interview clips over thumping house music. Still have to admit that it is different.3. I'm Addicted (8.79)I like the chorus of this song, have hints of Future Lovers and Stay (81) in its resonating out-of-body feel. The fact that "MDMA" (not MDNA as some reviewers and even critics pointed out) was incorporated into the song suggested it was written after MIA's suggestion that the name of the album should be MDNA. Other than the urgent chorus, the song on a whole is a throwaway. But a good one.4. Turn Up the Radio (8.80)Another song that got rave reviews from fans. It is catchy and have a nice melody, but the lyrics are a bit lame and cliche-ridden and the chorus a bit repetitious. It is also ironic that she is singing about turning up the radio when in recent years she's been ignored by "mainstream" radio except for oldies and dance stations. It is radio-friendly, which means it is disposable like most of what is being played nowadays.5. Give Me All Your Luvin (8.74)I have reviewed this song already when it came out as a single. It is generic but catchy and the raps by MIA and Minaj do not belong in the song. Lyrics are juvenile and full of cliches.6. Some Girls (8.70)Wonder if this isn't a jibe to the current crop of Madonna wannabes and also the likes of Snooki and Paris Hilton. The song is like a follow-up to Hard Candy's She's Not Me; but less effective. If only the music wasn't trying to drown out Madonna's vocals.7. Superstar (6.00)OMG, this song is absolutely cringe-inducing. Started out with a great pounding intro and the song had a great melody but the lyrics were completely inane and juvenile and cliche-ridden (starting to see a pattern?). It is a song you expect Jessica Simpson or Hannah Montana to sing, and THEIR fans while fawning over a Twilight movie poster, not someone of Madonna's caliber. "Super duper star"? Maybe Lourdes wrote this and bamboozled her mom into using it, or perhaps Madonna is trying to attract a younger audience but this is a definitely piece of throwaway embarrassing piece of fluff. The music and melody saved it somewhat.8. I Don't Give A (7.50)I appreciated this song more once I got my hands on the lyrics. Almost like the American Life rap part of the song but done right. However, again, Madonna and the music is fighting for prominence on who is the loudest. Nicki Minaj's rap is appropriate here instead of Gimme All Ur Luvin and should have been the end with her declaration of Madonna's queenly status, instead it meander on for another half a minute of pointless drum beats and noise.9. I'm A Sinner (9.00)An Orbit-concoted synthesis between Beautiful Stranger and Amazing, I'm A Sinner is very catchy but again, a bit repetitious in some part and toward the end, it seems as if the song is finally winding down, Orbit found another way to extend it for another minute. Otherwise, I'm A Sinner is one of the highlights of the album. I often think he and Madonna wrote and/or produced some of the best songs in her career: Ray of Light, Time Stood Still, Liquid Love, Beautiful Stranger; I hope she will continue to collaborate with William Orbit in her future albums.10. Love Spent (7.30)Sprinkled with strings like Die Another Day and even Papa Don't Preach, this is another diddly about her divorce. Oh, there is also a banjo in there somewhere. Love Spent is curious in which it is like two songs spliced together, the first half was rather boring with Madonna singing in a falsetto voice about would her husband married her if she wasn't rich, the second half was a killer chorus which I am not sure if it was worth the wait because as a whole, the song lacked a certain something and spark.11. Masterpiece (8.82)This Golden Globe Award winning song had Elton John and his husband (LOL) all in a conniption. The ballad is ok, but ruined by some, you guessed it, cliche-ridden and lame lyrics ("If you were the Mona Lisa, you would be hanging in the Louvre"). But this is a welcome change from all the thumping dance beat that came before. But it does paled when compared to Live To Tell, Take A Bow and even The Look of Love.12. Falling Free (9.30)This melancholy ballad is almost an acapella, with minimal instrumentation but still packed a wallop because of its beautiful melody and Madonna's performance. Not radio friendly (but then again, radio plays crap nowadays) but definitely one of the best songs on the album. No doubt amateur DJs will make their own dance remixes by superimposing some dance beat over the song; get ready see to a "Free to Go Dance Remix" surfacing on the web. In the end, it is a testament to the song that it got my attention from beginning to end without a single drum beat. Now we are on to the bonus tracks on the second CD of the Deluxe version. I figure Madonna realize these will be leaked on the net like "Liquid Love", "Gone Gone Gone", "Like A Flower", "Across the Sky", among others, might as well use them so she can charge a couple of extra bucks.13. Beautiful Killer (7.15)Sounds like Die Another Day combined with the unreleased song from Hard Candy: Animal, this song comes across as an early demo for the Die Another Day Bond song. It had its charms but its derivative nature and lame lyrics kind of killed it for me.14. I F***** Up (7.38)Using the "f" word is rather a blatant attempt to get some attention. Why bother unless the song can stand on its own strength? This piece is rather dreary and again, alluded to Madonna's failed marriage. It started slow and it does picked up around the middle before going back to dreary mode again.15. B-Day (7.25)This one is a 60s infused number that conjures out images of Nancy Sinatra in mini-skirts and go-go boots, but otherwise worked strictly as a novelty song more than anything else.16. Best Friend (6.55)Another about Guy Ritchie, no doubt. I do not like the melody to this song and I saw this as album filler. I have to forced myself to avoid hitting the forward button.17. Give Me All Your Luvin (remix) (6.76)This proves that this song, no matter how you remix it, it simply can't be improved. In fact, I think the remix is worst than the original version. So overall I gave the 12 song version of MDNA got a 8.40 average. The 5-song "Deluxe" second disc got a 7.01 average.Taken as a whole, the Deluxe version of MDNA ranked a 7.71 out of 10.MDNA is not as good as her previous work in the 1980s and 90s, but definitely still good and worth a listen. The main problem with the album is the repetitious nature of some of its songs and as most everyone pointed out, some of the lyrics leaves a lot to be desired; but the melodies and the hooks often save the songs from being complete duds.Still, Madonna proved that she can continue to compose and produce songs that are distinguishable from one another and doesn't sounds too generic or cookie cutter, even at their lamest (and this album have the ultimate example of lameness in Superstar). One can hope that if Falling Free is any indication, it is the direction Madonna will be taking with her music in the future.
