would have been 5 stars but...
... they couldn't leave it alone. The real novel is excellent and it's really different from anything I've read before. But, am I reviewing Jane Bowle's novel or this book? Because, this book has some problems .The introduction is gossipy and weak. Nothing but an massive spoiler. I don't think we need help deciding for ourselves what we think of the story. There's also an extra piece at the end by Truman Capote, another catty gossiper. His remarks have no place in the same space as this great novel.By the way, even the cover and the dust jackets are spoilers. So what we have here is a literary masterpiece surrounded by offal. My advice is go straight to the novel and then afterwards laugh at the foolish additions.

Way off the beaten path
Very quirky indeed. A friend of mine who enjoys an off-kilter read could not get through this. If you like something way off the beaten path, try this. It takes a while to pick up on the rhythm, or lack thereof, but I ultimately liked it.

Short enough that I made it through it but I'm still not sure what on earth made everyone love the book so much
What a strange book. I mean it was interesting to see what the heck what going on with the 2 women and what they were getting themselves into but otherwise, what a strange and pointless book. Short enough that I made it through it but I'm still not sure what on earth made everyone love the book so much. Maybe would've been a good one for book club because I'd like to discuss it it further because maybe I missed something???

Subtle and Odd
This is a very strange book about two strange women and their oddball adventures. I greatly enjoyed it for its subtle humor and a social commentary that sneakily peers out from under the bed. Recommended for people who like art novels that are a bit off the beaten track.

Ironic Off-key Hilarity
This was a revelation to me. It's a hilarious, sophisticated, and a has just a hint of raunchiness about it. An ingenious study of some very off key characters. The indifferent eccentricity of the two titular characters might be off putting to some but this is not inaccessible stuff. Much more charming then her husband, a much lighter, more ironic and humane touch. And short! Can't recommend it enough.

Worthy of the adjective "unique". I'm so glad I read it.
Completely deranged, yet utterly believable. I have never read anything else quite like it... though Burroughs probably comes closest.

Bargepoles strongly recommended
This is an exceptionally ill-written, pretentious text: I wouldn’t dignify it with the word ‘book’. An assemblage of ‘original,’ ‘eccentric’ apologies for literary characters are put though a succession of meaningless events by a writer heavily reliant on memories of holidays spent in places she thought were ‘exotic’. The only ‘serious’ thing about this book is the huge number of your brain cells that will die as you plug through it. Be warned: avoid at all costs!! NB This book was recommended in ‘The Guardian’ Review by Joe Dunthorne. You may draw your own conclusions about what this implies about his own publications.

Charming and delightful!
It's a long time since I've read this book but it has stay with me as one of my favorites. It a delightful journey through the prejudiced world of two very different ladies, who would normally not meet or mix socially. Its full of surprises and is written with a childlike candor and simplicity, which one might mistake for trivial, but which reveals a profound understanding of the possibility of human relations without preconception. It reminds me of a similiar quality in the book written by a Victorian 9 year old Daisy A[shford: The young visitors.[ASIN:0701127252 The Young Visiters]]

Imaginative observant writer
Loved this book . I heard about the writer after reading Denton Welch she was mentioned in the forward. Her style and imagination are quite wacky.
