A Great Book
There are many books about magic; but very few of them actually look into how and why magic works. This one does, and in very thoroughly. Written in a pleasant, easy-to-read style, it will lead you into the various avenues of magial workings. Both general and specific, giving practical exercises for every chapter, it is a great addition to any occult bookshelf. It will help the beginner avoid a number of mistakes and misconceptions; the intermediate magician will find quite a few insights in it; and even advanced practitioners may well get something out of it, even if it is only new explanations for what they do.

Great Introduction to Magic(k)
If you're looking for a dogma-free guide to practical magic, this is as good as it gets. It's one of the few books on the topic I've read all the way through, and it covers all the basics in an easy to follow way that doesn't assume a particular religion or adherence to a magical order. Also makes for a good reference later on, especially if you're like me and end up needing a refresher after getting busy with other things.
