Orange Pi 5B 16G - Very fast shipping - very powerful SBC
The media could not be loaded. This is a very powerful SBC. I purchased the 16GB version (without a power supply because the case came with one) and am very pleased with it. The case that I got is the DVOZVO Orange Pi 5/5B Case with power supply (read separate review). The only negative thing that I have to say is the the company still has not fixed the problem with the fan running when the SBC is powered off.I use this SBC for many different things to include containers, VM’s, labs, and every day work. I also use multiple operating systems with it, but mainly use Ubuntu. The one annoying thing was that it delivers with the Chinese language when using the per-installed Android OS which must be changed to your preference. This was a bit tedious so here are some instructions and a video on how to choose the language you want to use:1. Go to the bottom of the screen and a select the square which opens the apps menu.2. Select “Settings” - it is the wheel/gear in the upper right corner.3. Scroll down until you see a symbol that looks like an information icon (circle with an “i” in it) – This is “System”.4. Select the top icon that looks like a world – This is “Languages & Input”.5. Now select the top icon that looks like an “X with an A” – This is “Languages”.6. Select the “+” (plus) symbol and then you can scroll down and select the language that you desire. You are not done yet. We need to delete the Chinese language.7. Once you have selected your desired language, click the three dots on the top right of the screen and then select the entry that appears where the “Trash Can” was. This will provide check boxes that can be selected next to each language.8. Click the Chinese language to select it and then in the top right click the “Trash Can” symbol. You must then confirm the deletion by selecting the choice on the RIGHT of the popup dialog. Now you should see all apps, menu items, and settings in the language that you selected.Have fun.TomUPDATEThis update is because I have received many questions about the Orange Pi 5B and I hope to answer some of them here. The first thing that I want to say is that this is a great SBC. I also have the Orange Pi 3 and Odroid XU4 (great SBC just not enough memory). I recommend the Orange Pi 5 to everyone and will probably get more to create a cluster.I have the Orange Pi 5B 16GB in a DVORAK case connected to a 4K TV, wired network (although WiFi is configured), Armbian as the primary OS (but I use others on occasion), a software RAID, and an additional extra external drive for storage.OS that the Orange Pi 5 ships with and OS installed on SD card with no picture after booting:• The OS that comes with the Orange Pi 5B is in Chinese, but you can switch the language using my instructions from the original review.• If you flash an OS to an SD card and do not have a picture after booting, like I did, you may want to change your HDMI cable (that was my problem). I have the Orange Pi 5B connected to a 4K TV and my HDMI cable could not handle that so I had to get a new one. One other thing to consider here is that you need to make sure to use a high quality SD card.WiFi and the antenna:• I have a DVORAK Orange Pi 5 case and the WiFi antenna is inside the case. I have not had any problems with this setup and can connect to my home WiFi without any problems – there is no need to place the antenna outside of the case! – Unless it is made from metal.• A lot of people have had problems setting up the WiFi. The only OS that comes per-configured to setup the WiFi is Debian (to my knowledge at the time of writing this). All other OS’s need some configuration that may be tedious for some. What OS is the best to use:• That is a personal preference. I use them all, switching out the SD cards periodically and am currently using Armbian as the OS of my preference. What programs can I install and run on the Orange Pi 5?• Just about everything! I have all programs installed that I use except for VirtualBox which I am still working on to get it running!• Some of the programs will require that you setup some repositories to be able to install them, but you can search for what you need to do online. How do I flash a different OS to an SD card?• I use Balena Etcher which seems to exist for all OSs (Linux, Mac OS, and Windows).• Just make sure that you use a good quality, high speed, SD card.

Opi5B beats RasPi5
Very good replacement for RasPi5B, loads Opi OS quickly and is usable!

2-3x faster than Raspberry Pi 4 -- some quirks to consider
You can't use the GPIO pins without running as sudo, no matter what you do with dialout groups or owning gpio/mem, etcNo option to use a carrier board for using the OrangePi 5 in actual products. This is only a consumer device

Great system but terrible support
Been using the Orange Pi 5b as desktops since the Raspberry Pis became scarce during Covid. While the Joshua Reik Ubuntu and Armbian Debian "legacy" are great, ... the native Orange Pi support is awful. I use the Armbin framework on all my systems ... e.g. Radxa , Hardkernel, and Libre, and on my x86_64 systems as well.I loaded these files from raspbian.org to my Armbian Debian systems:chromium-browser_125.0.6422.133-rpt1_arm64.deb chromium-codecs-ffmpeg_125.0.6422.133-rpt1_arm64.deblibwidevinecdm0_4.10.2662.3+1_arm64.deb chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_124.0.6367.73-rpt1_arm64.deb... so that I can use Netflix, ... but I spent most of my time in Arduino or Thonny working on microcontroller code or in Openscad/Inkscape making drawings for the parts I make in my local makerspace.uname -aLinux orangepi5 5.10.160-legacy-rk35xx #1 SMP Wed May 15 03:04:45 UTC 2024 aarch64 GNU/Linux

Powerful SBC.
This arrived with android in Chinese. I used google translate on my phone to switch to English. I decided to install an optimised version of Ubuntu and it is very responsive. I am very happy with my purchase.

Too complicated
UPDATE 2023/09/08Upon arrival, I looked over the SBC and was disappointed to find that the WIFI antennas are soldered into place, and that the notion for the protective cases for this SBC is to let the WIFI antennas hang out a couple of holes. Proper wifi antennas with connectors would be the answer here. I have not even attempted to operate ths device, it is going back to Amazon.--------------------------------------------------There is no straightforward way to replace the operating system on this device, as far as I can tell. I have other responsibilities, and don't have time for changing languages, using special software tools, and so on, to change settings. I will consider the Pi 5, which has a removable M.2 instead of a built-in emmc.If there is ever a straightforward way to, for instance, install a fresh OS to the emmc from an SD card or USB device, I will look into it again. But as far as I'm concerned, this is an unfinished product for Chinese users.

Get a different SBC
I got this hoping for a powerful little platform that is portable enough to position anywhere. It is decently powerful. However:There's no sensible boot loading, like holding a button for SD. It always boots from SD card if one is present. Even if that is not bootable. That makes it unusable for me for a few purposes.Plugging in a USB device it doesn't like takes down the whole USB bus on one side, at least one type A and one type C port. I'm not certain what it will agree with or not. I am writing this because unplugging a keyboard and plugging a USB camera just knocked everything offline. AFAICT it must be rebooted to use any USB on that side of the board again.Really wish I had bought a different SBC.
