Almost perfect, but key design flaw leaves me wondering...
This should be getting 5 stars. I really wanted them to. Finally, a pair of cargo shorts that are made of lightweight material, the proper length to just below the knees, not too baggy but with enough room that they don't taper up to your nads, it had the makings of a perfect pair of shorts. I loved them for the first time I wore them. But, as some of the other reviews allude to, the front pocket lining started to deteriorate immediately. I had a single credit card in my pocket. I bend down to tie my shoe. I hear a rip but I can't find where it came from. The next thing I know is that I'm putting my phone into the same pocket, and one of my fingers gets caught in this hole in my pocket, which is a satiny, nylon material. I get that maybe they didn't want to use thick material and cause the outline of the pockets to show up in the front of your shorts, but I'd rather have visible pocket linings through my shorts than to not have pockets.I'm debating whether I should send these back or get a tailor to replace the pockets... I'd hate to part with these shorts, but I'd hate even more if these pockets break through and I lose my wallet or crack my phone as a result.

Good, but probably bad if you have cats
Cats like strings, right? well, good luck if you're wearing these. First of all the hanging cinching straps at the bottoms are ridiculous. Like seriously, I apologize if there's a genuine function for those, but if it's styling, good god man! I cut mine off right away.I really like these, they're really light weight, seem pretty sturdy. I wore them to the beach a lot, over board shorts and didn't feel like I was weighed down.Length wise, I'm 6'2'', and they were perfect length, right down to about the knees. Now the cat part, there's a lot of frayed strings hanging off this thing which leads me to believe it might not last as long as I'd hope. So far 1.5 months in, getting regular use and they're doing pretty well.

Great styling and comfort for $9.99 but mine was defective. Probably why it was so low priced. Kept it anyway because I like it.
I found a super low price option on this ($9.99). Maybe it was so low priced due to defects however. It wasn't worth trying to get the manufacturer to replace them because the defects didn't bother me too much and they look and feel great to wear. Definitely needed the belt that came with them though. Not just because I ordered a loose size, but also because almost all the buttons, including the one that keeps the pants closed, fell off after a few times wearing them. Besides that defect, the main pockets weren't sewn correctly. One pocket is perfect for a pistol, but not my hand. I don't have a pistol. The other pocket is too shallow with uneven stitching obviously half way up where the pocket was supposed to end, but my hand fits. Luckily, there's lots of other pockets in these pants. If I had paid $40 and got all these defects, I would certainly have returned them, but for the price, I'm OK with it. I just wish it had advertised that the price was low due to defects.

These shorts stand out
These shorts will grab some attention as it did for me. During the summer at the school district I work for, the dress code is different for when school is in session so after wearing these, I received a few comments on how bright red these are. The shorts do standout well, in a good wayI've owned these shorts for a year so as far as premature rips, tears, loose stitches, there are none. They still look new. Of course, I don't abuse it eitherI ordered the waist size 38 and the fitment is accurate, however, I ordered on 38 on due to wanting some extra room when I kneel or sit down so I do use the belt every time I wear this. I could have also bought size 34 - 36, but probably wouldn't be as comfortable overall

A bit smaller than size says, inferior craftsmanship
Pros: Fit's okay-ish (a bit tighter than with my regular jeans), looks somewhat good and I like the belt.Cons:I opened them up and tried them on, used them in the house for a couple of hours so I could see the quality build, sat down and everything was fine but then, when i moved a bit on my seat, I felt them rip. I changed to some jeans and there it was, a 1 inch opening at the middle of the shorts. took them to a seamstress because I saw that it was not the cloth that ripped but the seams were very flimsy and so she just did them again and they were good (better, actually) as new. I wasn't forcing the fabric or anything, Southpole just didn't use enough thread apparently!Another con is how much DIRT AND HAIR they attrack, I have a dog and i'm used to a little hair on my clothes but for some reason this fabric just attracts it like mad!Wouldn't buy again, though the belt is pretty cool

I'd Buy These Again
These shorts are the length and fit I like. I've been doing more of my clothes shopping online which is a gamble because I've had my share of merchandise that didn't fit right or wasn't what I expected from the photograph. These are great not only for a good fit but the material doesn't wrinkle much. For my trips into the tropics, these work well because even when I'm hot and sweaty, at least my pants still look good. I don't care for the belt so I use one of my leather ones but other than that, I'd buy another one.
