Not for Galanthophiles
Few books are available on snowdrops so it was exciting to think another book on the subject would add to ones knowledge. With so many advances in the world of snowdrops over the past few years I expected far more from this book and found it disappointing. It skimmed over the surface of the standard snowdrop facts, cultivation, propagation, where to plant, lists of snowdrop gardens and nurseries etc all of which can be found in depth in other books. One chapter deals with around 60 specific snowdrops. Only 60 out of over 2000 named snowdrops available now so very disappointing from that aspect as well as again the snowdrops included have already been more than adequately covered in other books. For instance the last snowdrop book published in 2013, A Gardener's Guide to Snowdrops by Freda Cox, includes almost 1000 snowdrops and there has been a massive explosion in numbers since that date which one would have thought any new author on the subject would have wanted to reflect. To a certain extent therefore this book has been a missed opportunity. It would have been far more interesting and useful to have had some of the new names and more detailed information on lesser known snowdrops rather than a basic rehash of the more common ones. On the plus side there are some decent photographs and it is a useful book for those just getting interested in the subject. However probably not for the committed Galanthophile looking to further their knowledge as they would find little new to interest them and would be far better off spending that little bit extra and buying one of the more in depth books on the subject.
