Inspiring teaching material
A most interesting and enjoyable CD. The first track, Sarasate "Gypsy Airs", is reminiscent of that old war horse, rarely heard nowadays, of Heifetz playing this same piece. Of course, the range, virtuosity and remarkable changes of tone and volume which can be elicited from a string instrument is very different from that of a wind display. Nevertheless, as a piece of bravura music making, it is just what it says on the tin.All these pieces can be enjoyed for their own sake but they could fill a special place in the armoury of a music teacher who is trying to get children interested in this simple but satisfying wind. In the right hands, it would be possible for the tutor to amend the manuscript to be easier for pupils to cope with. In this way, not only will they have a target to aim at but, at the very least, be able to acquire an elementary music reading capability from which they would be able to derive increasing pleasure as they are exposed to music later on.A particularly good choice, then, for teachers.

Recorder Bravura
I would start by saying this CD does exactly what it says on the tin (Recorder Bravura)- spectacularly well. (not so sure what the cover image is about - the artists look more like a couple of hit-men - don't let that put you off). As can be seen by the list of tracks, it is an extremely varied disc and there will be something for everyone. The variety between fast showy pieces and slower more reflective music provides a good balance, such that you can listen to the disc without tiring. As you would expect from Piers Adams, superb playing and equally impressive piano playing from Howard Beach. I particularly enjoyed "Come Away Death" (Finzi), "Vocalise" (Rachmaninov) and "Chaconne" (Vitali) makes a great finale. A most highly enjoyable and fun disc.
