Collection of two films centred around an Asian family living in the UK. In 'East is East' (1999), Pakistani chip shop owner George Khan (Om Puri) lives with his white wife Ella (Linda Bassett) and their seven children. George wants to raise his children as devout Muslims, but things go wrong when his eldest son Nazir (Ian Aspinall) flees his arranged marriage midway through the ceremony. Undeterred, George plans a marriage for his son Tariq (Jimi Mistry), but when Tariq discovers what is happening he rebels against his father, and the future of the family is plunged into doubt. In 'West is West' (2010), writer Ayub Khan-Din continues the story of the dysfunctional Khan family and its ongoing struggles with life between two worlds. In 1975, four years on from the events in the first film, the youngest of the Khans, Sajid (Aquib Khan), is fast approaching adolescence. As a British-Pakistani living in Salford, he finds himself caught between his father's despotic insistence on Pakistani tradition, and the merciless school bullies who celebrate his racial difference by repeatedly shoving his head down the toilet. It isn't long before Sajid retaliates with a growing repertoire of misdeeds. Realising that drastic measures are called for, George (Om Puri) decides to take Sajid on an eye-opening trip to Pakistan to meet the first wife and daughters he abandoned 35 years before.

Love it
I absolutely loved east is east (not keen on the follow up) but found it so difficult to find the 1st movie on blu ray. The price is so cheap for both movies, in fact it's a good price if it was only the first film. Not really a fan of british films except for that rare gem you get once in a while and this is certainly one of those. Brilliant comedy.

Funny and heartwarming
You can't have bread without butter, or fish without chips. Likewise you can't have East is East without West is West. They are two sides of the same coin. Both laugh out loud funny in places, they are also poignant, and draw you in to the lives of this close-knit yet far flung family. Literal and metaphorical journeys are taken, but in the end these two films are about the way a family copes with its ups and downs and each other.I am not a big collector of DVDs but this is one that will get revisited again. And again....

I have to say I loved these films
I have to say I loved these films. They are not PC, but this only makes them more appealing. It shows the problems of integration from both sides, but it is very well written, and highlights tensions very well. They show the problem from the family side as well. Well written, and very funny, for anyone interested in this problem, it is compulsive watching! Subtitles very helpful!
