Excellent value wide beam single chip LED downlighter. Good light quality. Single chip matches look of Halogen down-lighters.
I recently decided that the time was right to replace 26 x 50W 12v halogen ceiling down-lighters in our house with more energy efficient LEDs. I firstly decided on 220V GU10 fittings and lamps to replace the 12V fittings and eliminate the unnecessary12V transformers. I had read that LEDs can be often more directional (typically 25-40 degree beam angle), their light may be bluer and the "quality" of the light (measured by Colour Rendering Index) be "odder". So I bought a short list of 5 highly rated brands of down-lighters from Amazon UK and put one of each kind in the same room to test them. I compared five lamps -7W EnergyBrite {Dimmable GU10 7W LED Bulb SHARP COB LED, Warm White 3000K, Chips on board (COB)} (this review)5.5W Philips {Philips MASTER LED 5.5W GU10 Spot Light, Warm White, Dimmable},5.3W Philips Master VALUE {Philips Master LED GU10 5W Spotlight (50W replacement), Dimmable, Warm White 2700K},5W Blackberg {Blackberg GU10 LED Light Bulb / Dimmable / 50W equivalent / 5W / 350 lumens / 3000K warm white / 45° spot},5W JackyLed {JACKY LED 2nd Generation 100% Original Epistar Chip Ultra Bright 5W 45 degree beam GU10 Dimmable LED COB}.The first thing that surprised me was that those lights with a single source of light (aka COB -Chip on Board) looked much nicer viewed on the ceiling whether on or off, compared to those that had multiple LEDs, which reminded me of an insect's eye. So that eliminated the multi LED 5.3W Philips MasterValue lamp which otherwise had the nicest, warmest light, combined with a lovely quality of light. The other Philips 5.5W master LED was also very very good, actually even brighter than a 50W halogen, also with a very nice quality of light but it was the most expensive at £12. The 5W Blackberg was a little less good but at £10 the second most expensive on test so I eliminated that one also. This left the £7.50 EB 7W 60 degree wide angle lamp and the £8.0 5W 40 degree JackyLed . Both had beams generated by a single COB/Epistar LED chip. Both produced a good quality of light, which had about the same colour temperature of the existing halogens but given their CRI of 80-85% did have a slight "oddness" about the light, objects seeming a little "washed out". This seems inevitable with current LED technology, but given the efficiency benefits I decided that this (minor) effect was acceptable. The 7W EB seemed no brighter than the 5W JackLED but had a smoother, wider beam and a better quality of light (CRI 85% v CRI 80%). The JackyLED had a more strongly faceted reflector/lens which yielded a rather uneven beam with visible yellow and whiter spots. The final factor was price: the EB was a little cheaper, but used more power. I decided to split my purchase between the 5W JackyLEDs and 7W EP and use the EP where a softer nicer light was required and the JackLEDS elsewhere. I have now been using these lights for a month. Unfortunately one of the EP lights has already failed (9% early failure!) but the rest are delivering a light very similar to the previous 26 halogen lights but with an energy consumption reduced by almost 90%. I returned the failed EP unit and I am please to say I got an immediate replacement. Interestingly the vendor told me that I should use their NON-DIMABLE lights for un-dimmed applications for max reliability. Conclusion:If you don't mind the look of multiple LED chips then one can pay less and achieve a wider beam with other LED lamps I think, but for me, when replacing halogens, the better ceiling aesthetics of the COB lamp when turned on or off warrants the extra expense of a single chip light source lamp. The wider beam spread of this 7W 3000K Lamp suits many applications very well and the quality of the illumination is very fine and the price is low. Recommended.
