A little baggy in the belly area but works well
I have an English Cocker Spaniel, 14 1/4” tall at the shoulder and about 27 lb. I bought this onesie as an outdoor coat to run him in the field and not have to spend hours afterward brushing out burrs and sticks and bathing off the mud. The fit was surprisingly good. It is a bit loose in the belly area, but my boy does have a tuck up so I think this probably can’t be helped without custom coats for different breeds. The stretch is excellent, so it wasn’t too difficult to get on him. I have a similar coat made for outdoor use on my other dog, and his is less stretchy and thus much more difficult to get the back legs into. Once the coat was a little wet, it sagged a bit in the upper legs, but that didn’t affect the protection nor his comfort level. He ran in it just like he does without a coat. It didn’t restrict his movement at all and it didn’t cause any discomfort. His coat was protected well from sticks and burrs, and the coat didn’t get snagged or damaged in any way. Although I didn’t use it in the exact way intended, I did notice that when I took it off there was hair on the inside, which doesn’t happen with my other coat, so I believe it likely works well as a shed defender too. I would recommend this coat.

Great but sizing them is difficult based on description
These are great and they fit my dogs well. The size was tricky to figure out. My dogs weigh the same (50 pounds) but one dog is about an inch taller. The large did not fit him. It was stretching at the seems. So I had to order an XL which is much better. Now that I have a better fit it seems to work well. True test will be the first long distance car ride

Disappointed
Hey fellow pet parents! Wanted to share my experience with the Shed Defender dog suit, a purchase driven by my battle against pet fur at home. This review is about my second attempt; my first go didn’t quite hit the mark size-wise even though I followed the size chart. That was a minor hiccup, though, and I quickly purchased a large before I even got the first one sent back. I had a big surprise birthday party for my husband planned and I didn’t want to have my guests drowning in dog hair. When the replacement arrived just in the nick of time, my excitement was palpable. I needed this asap because the party was the next day. But right out of the packaging, it was clear this ‘new’ suit had seen better days - seams and strings hanging loose as if it already had a story to tell. Did I get a used one? Or was this one made by a child just learning how to sew? Despite its less-than-pristine condition, necessity trumped aesthetics, and I put it to use, hopeful it would be the fur-fighting hero I needed. And though my dog didn’t love it, it did its job for the most part. The real disappointment set in post its first wash. My dog escaped out before we got to unzip and she ended up peeing in it. I knew this was already in poor shape and was nervous washing even though some reviews said it washed well. Though it went in alone and on gentle cycle, it nonetheless emerged with a hole, a new badge of its fragile existence. My video captures its initial state for anyone curious about what to expect straight out of the packaging. While the idea behind this dog suit is nothing short of brilliant for those of us dealing with excessive shedding, the reality fell short. The quality and durability just don’t match up to the hefty price tag. I’m almost convinced I could craft something similar with a little effort and it would still fit much better than the large did. Again the sizing is so confusing. Still, I’m on the lookout for a worthy solution to the fur dilemma. I pray someone else starts to make something similar that is worth my money and praise. For those considering this suit, proceed with cautious optimism. It’s a fantastic concept that, unfortunately, suffers in execution. Here’s hoping for a sturdier, more reliable version in the future!

Make sure you get the right size
I bought this for my 60-lb. lab/pit mix to prevent her from licking the wound on her back leg. I don’t think I bought the correct size (even though I measured), but since she peed on it within the first ten minutes of wearing it, I couldn’t return it. That being said, it really is a good bodysuit and would probably be just right if the size was correct. Pros: + Easy to put on and take off (if you have a cooperative dog). + Full-length sleeves, covers all the way down to the feet. Can be rolled up if too long. + Lightweight and breathable. + Well-made zipper that goes all the way from neck to tail. Easy to unzip for potty access. + Easy to wash and dry without shrinking. Cons: - Very stretchy, almost too stretchy. My dog literally managed to get herself out of it without unzipping it at all. (I still haven’t figured out how she did that!) - May not fit right if your dog is overweight or wide in the chest. Again, I may have bought the wrong size, but it fit my dog snugly in some places and loosely in others. - Because it’s so stretchy, your dog may get their back legs caught up in it. Watch them carefully for a few days before you leave them alone in it. All in all, a good bodysuit that does the job as long as you get the right size. I would definitely recommend buying multiple sizes to see which one fits your dog best.

Review for use in cats to prevent overgrooming
There aren't a lot of reviews of this product RE its use in cats so I thought I would leave my 2 cents. We got the Shed Defender on the suggestion of our vet to try to help our cat avoid overgrooming and creating hot spots. Our cat's preferred licking areas are her butt and the inside and outside of her rear legs, which means that the usual surgical recovery suits do not cover the correct areas. We have tried many other things (various surgical cones-- she is like Gumbi and can still somehow reach everything, antidepressants, steroids, antibiotics, an allergen-free diet, various ointments and creams, etc.-- any other suggestions please comment!!) prior to the suit. The cat in question is a medium-sized female cat, about 9 lbs or so. We first tried the size XXS (for 8-12 lbs), and while this fit, it was very snug-- to the point that she felt immobilized and did not want to move around with the suit on. So we sent that back and tried the size XS (12-18 lbs). The fit on this was better. It was still snug but not suffocatingly tight. The suit is made out of very stretchy lycra type-material. You can trim the legs if they are too long. The zipper will stay open to wherever you unzip it. However, even with the larger suit on she was still reluctant to make any kind of large movements-- stepping up or jumping onto or over things. Unfortunately this also included stepping up into the litterbox, so several pee accidents occurred. We experimented with unzipping the suit to varying degrees and even taking her back legs out of the suit... but she would either accidentally pee on it or it gave her enough access that she could still get at frequently-licked areas. The suit does wash well, btw. I both hand washed it and put it in the washing machine in a delicates bag and let it air dry. I think in order for this to work for our purposes we would basically have to be home all day and take her out of the suit several times a day for potty breaks. So my conclusion for use in cats is: 1) due to the peculiarities of feline anatomy, order a size up from your cat's actual weight, and 2) if your cat is neurotic enough to need this suit because of overgrooming then he or she will probably also be too neurotic to tolerate wearing it. If you think it might work, it's probably worth trying out, since returns are free and you will likely know right away if your cat will be willing to wear it. If nothing else, you will be amused by seeing your cat dressed up in skin-tight lycra like he or she is in an 80's aerobicize video. P.S. I am also baffled by why this suit is so shockingly expensive.

This suit is a life saver for allergic dogs with hot spots!
This suit is a life saver!! My English Setter has terrible allergies and every year there's a time where she licks and bites her legs until it's all raw, bloody and inflamed. She's about 45lbs and lean, the size L fits her well, just the legs could have been a little bit longer since this girl has looong legs. I might try to order a size up next time. Within three days (and nights) of wearing the shed defender, all of her hot spots healed up and no antibiotics or vet visit necessary. I used to take her to the vet for seasonal allergy treatment, but she still got hot spots which got infected and she still needed antibiotics and steroids to heal. Everyone with an allergic dog can relate. The worst is to wake up at night to the sound of your dog licking, because you know when you turn on the light and check on them they will have terrible sores all over their legs. Since I put this suit on her she didn't even try to get to the hot spots anymore. The material is very lightweight and doesn't limit her in any way. The people who say that their dogs got cuts from the seams must have bought a way too small a size. My dog is running and playing all day long in our yard and it seems she's not even aware that she wears it. The only bad thing that happened was that my dog scratched herself near the shoulderblade and tore a small hole in the fabric, which I will repair by sewing it up. The material is thin and breathable so your dog doesn't overheat. It's fairly expensive, but it's so worth it!

Not for long haired dogs!
I bought this for my 6 month old cavapoo puppy that just got neutered and was licking his wounds like crazy. The vet provided us with a large plastic cone for him to wear for two weeks to prevent him licking. He hated the cone. I thought this would be a more humane alternative to the cone. I got this on Friday. Fit him great. He’s 10Lb and about 15 in long, I bought the size extra small. It worked well keeping him from licking too. I thought this was going to be great! I noticed too, that he was shedding less. I could hold him wearing black and not be covered in hair. By Monday I took it off for a break. This is when I noticed that his fur was covered in terrible matting. I wish the manufacturer would have recommended removing it daily, and brushing, as its clearly necessary for long haired dogs. Being a product specifically for defending against shedding, I wouldn’t have thought it would be problematic to a dogs coat. I will not be putting it on my dog again, mattes are extremely difficult to remove and also painful for my pup. If it’s a short haired dog, I think this product would work better.

Gets the Job Done
TLDR: Got this to protect sutures and it got the job done well. a little cumbersome to put on. True to size. Easy to clean. I have had this for 6 months and used it daily for 2. I got this for my dog when he was recovering from elbow surgery. I needed something that would cover the incisions at the back of his elbows so that he would not be able to lick them. (I wanted to avoid the cone of shame if possible). This suit did the trick. It also worked great for my friend’s golden retriever, who needed a hot spot covered while it healed. Both dogs fit into the large (chow 55 lbs, golden 65 lbs) comfortably. It’s a little tricky to get on at first, but once you get used to it, it becomes routine. I recommend doing the whole thing with your dog sitting. Over the head first, then the front legs, then the back. The back are especially hard to do out of the sitting position. Luckily my dog is very easy-going and doesn’t mind it being tugged over his head and sticking his legs in, etc. It’s something I could see a less tolerant dog having an issue with though. I also think it would not work if you have a dog that’s a big chewer, since it’s easy to chew through and wouldn’t prevent a dog from really chewing on a would, rash, etc—much better for those who only need a mild deterrent or who just want to lick. This suit is also very easy to clean. It’s machine washable and I throw it in the dryer too and haven’t had any issues. I would definitely recommend taking the suit off every few hours and giving the skin time to breathe because if you leave it on for too long all at once, their skin gets a little oily and icky (at least my dog’s did; keep in mind he has a ridiculous amount of hair.) Once on properly, the dog has total freedom of movement and ability to run, play and position themselves however they please. Note: it’s important, especially if you have a male dog that you unzip the belly enough for them to pee. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for something to cover a skin issue or wound in a vulnerable or hard to protect location. Good quality and good bang for your buck.

Excellent quality and coverage
This suit is great quality and well made. It covers very well and I expect a female dog would be fantastic. Little tricky with the zip needing to be undone slightly so allow a pee hole for a male but I’m sure this will be sorted one day.
